ERIE, Pa. – Gannon Volleyball finished as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Runner-Up after a five-set title match that ended with Pitt-Johnstown edging the Lady Knights 15-13 in the decisive set. Pitt-Johnston won, 17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12, 15-13.

Gannon rolled in the first set, 25-17, over the Mountain Cats. The Lady Knights were down 22-17 in the second set and rallied with an 8-1 run to capture a 25-23 set victory. Pitt-Johnstown was able to edge Gannon, 25-21, in the third set before taking the fourth set, 25-12. The fifth set went back-and-forth as Gannon led 8-7 before flipping the court. Pitt-Johnstown followed with five of the next seven points, taking a 13-10 lead.
Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and
Rebekah Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) recorded back-to-back kills and Gannon closed within 13-12. Each team traded points and UPJ had set point, up 14-13. Noelle Carota had the final kill to seal a 15-13 victory.
Gannon was led in scoring by
Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio/Solon) who had 16 kills and four blocks.
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) was the only other Lady Knight witih double-digit kills, collecting 14 kills and 22 digs. It was Smith's 12
th double-double of the season.
Maggie Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led the Lady Knights with a career-high 25 digs. Her previous career-high was also against UPJ earlier this season with 21 digs.
Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) paced Gannon with 43 assists. She also chipped in 17 digs and five aces.
Gannon fell to 28-6 while Pitt-Johnstown improved to 26-8.
The Lady Knights and Mountain Cats met in the PSAC title match for the second consecutive season. Gannon edged Pitt-Johnstown, 3-0, last season in the championship match.
The Lady Knights await the NCAA Division II Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m, for a bid the NCAA tournament. The winners of the PSAC, Mountain East Conference (MEC) and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) advance to the NCAA tournament, along with five at-large bids. Gannon was ranked second in the latest regional rankings released Nov. 15. Â Â Â
