THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The West Chester men's basketball team limited Gannon to 2-of-14 three-point shooting and forced 21 turnovers to earn a 52-44 victory Saturday afternoon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for both squads at the Hammermill Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • West Chester took the opening tip and hit a three-pointer 15 seconds into the contest. Unknown at the time, it was a lead the visitors would never relinquish.
  • After both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes and 41 seconds, the Golden Rams grabbed a 5-0 lead on a lay-up.
  • Gannon didn't record its first field until senior Gerrell Williams (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) converted a lay-up four minutes and 10 seconds into the contest.
  • West Chester extended its lead to 12-4 at the 12:25 mark and still maintained a 16-9 advantage with 5:16 remaining in the first half.
  • Gannon made a late push to get close at halftime. Junior Evan Phoenix (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) had a lay-up, before senior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) threw home a dunk, cutting the deficit to 19-17 with 1:58 showing on the clock.
  • West Chester added a free throw with 1:02 left and went to the break with a 20-17 edge.
  • Gannon climbed within one point on two occasions during the opening three minutes of the second half on a Williams jumper at the 18:07 mark and later on a Miraud lay-up at the 17:02 mark.
  • West Chester responded with a 24-6 run over the span of seven minutes and 28 seconds to assume control at 46-27 with 9:10 remaining.
  • Gannon still trailed 52-38, before scoring the final six points to account for the 52-44 final score.

GAME NOTES
  • The contest was the PSAC opener for both squads. Gannon and West Chester opened the season with two non-conference affairs last weekend.
  • Senior Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) led Gannon in scoring with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
  • Junior Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) was the only other Golden Knight in double digits with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals in 22 minutes off the bench.
  • Gannon shot 36.5 percent (19-52) from the field, 14.3 percent (2-14) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the free throw line. 
  • West Chester's Tyrell Long paced all scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds, hitting 7-of-10 shots.
  • Jackson Hyland also reached double figures with 13 points.
  • West Chester shot 46.5 percent (20-43) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from behind the arc and 60 percent (9-15) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon out-rebounded West Chester by a slim 32-29.
  • Both teams combined for 43 turnovers with West Chester committing 22 and Gannon turning it over 21 times.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has been listed among others receiving votes in the first two Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) Atlantic Region Media Polls of the season.
  • West Chester won at the Hammermill Center for the first time in five tries.
  • The Golden Rams defeated the Golden Knights for the sixth time in the last seven match-ups to assume a 6-5 lead in the all-time series.
