Gannon Women's Soccer Team Falls to No. 14 West Virginia Wesleyan in NCAA Tournament First Round

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's soccer team generated large advantages in shots (16-7) and corner kicks (6-1), but was unable to dent the scoreboard during a 2-0 loss to No. 14 West Virginia Wesleyan in the NCAA Division II Tournament first round hosted Friday afternoon by East Stroudsburg University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was played on even terms with both teams taking five shots.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Ashlee Schumacher turned away shots from sophomores Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) 24 seconds apart in the 15th minute.
  • The Bobcats nearly got on the board in the 21st minute when Natalie Prater hit the post, but she came back 3:31 later to score the first goal of the match off a free kick from 30 yards out.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan had chances to extend its lead, but senior Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) recorded saves in the 29th and 33rd minutes before the Bobcats went to halftime with a 1-0 lead.
  • After Gannon fired a pair of shots wide during the opening nine minutes of the second half, West Virginia Wesleyan doubled its lead in the 56th minute.
  • Kelsie Hibbs played a ball from the midfield that Carolyn Saulle chipped over the goalkeeper for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Gannon had a golden opportunity to claw back into the contest a little over three minutes later, but Chelsea Hubner stopped a Lady Knight penalty kick. Hubner had just entered the match at halftime.
  • The Lady Knights out-shot the Bobcats 9-0 after the second goal, but were unable to get a shot past Hubner who made saves on four of the attempts. The other five shots were not put on goal.

GAME NOTES
  • Friday's contest was played under sunny skies, but temperatures near 30 degrees.
  • Gannon out-shot East Stroudsburg 16-7, including an 11-2 edge during the final 45 minutes.
  • The Lady Knights also produced advantages in corner kicks (6-1) and fewest fouls (5-12).
  • Senior Hannah Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) and Lewis took six and four shots, respectively.
  • Indacochea started her 20th consecutive match in goal, recording two saves.
