HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon initially held Mansfield scoreless for the opening four minutes and 36 seconds. In the process, the Golden Knights opened a 7-0 lead. Four different Gannon players scored during the run.
  • Mansfield drew close twice midway through the first half, but the Golden Knights answered both times. Leading by two, freshman Jimmy Berger (Medina, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) hit a three-pointer to give the Golden Knights a 17-12 advantage with 11:44 remaining in the first half.
  • Moments later with a one-point lead, Jackson drilled a three-pointer to create a 20-16 edge. The bomb ignited a 7-0 run that included lay-ups by junior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and Phoenix for a 24-16 lead with 8:37 showing on the clock.
  • The Gannon lead sat at 26-22 when Mansfield engineered eight consecutive points to grab its first lead of the afternoon, 30-26.
  • After nearly three minutes without a point by either team, Jackson stopped the run with a three-pointer while being fouled and made the ensuing free throw to tie the game at 30.
  • Trailing 33-32, Gannon netted the final five points of the half with a Berger three-pointer and Phoenix put-back in the waning seconds for a 35-32 lead at the intermission.
  • Mansfield came out of the halftime locker room flying with the first two baskets to regain a 36-35 lead.
  • Gannon countered with back-to-back triples from Jackson to forge back ahead 41-36 two minutes into the half.
  • Mansfield cut the deficit to one possession four times during the next 10 minutes, but Gannon answered each time and never relinquished the lead.
  • Leading 57-55, the Golden Knights ripped off eight straight points to force Mansfield to call time-out with 7:01 remaining. The rally started with another Jackson triple followed by a Phoenix lay-in and three-pointer from senior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) that gave the visitors their biggest lead of the afternoon at 65-55.
  • Mansfield slowly chipped away and climbed back within one possession (72-69) on a pair of free throws from Malik Carter at the 1:18 mark, but Gannon eventually iced the victory by hitting 7-of-8 free throws during the final 60 seconds. Jackson was perfect in six attempts.
  • The two teams exchanged lay-ups during the final 10 seconds to account for the 81-76 Gannon victory.
