Gannon Lady Knights Nipped by Clarion in 10th Annual Pink Zone Game, 75-71 (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Clarion 75, Gannon 71
  • Records: Clarion (11-6, 8-3), Gannon (4-13, 4-7)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. – Hammermill Center
  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights couldn't hang on to a second-half lead as the Clarion Golden Eagles escaped the Hammermill Center with a 75-71 victory in the 10th annual Pink Zone game on Saturday (Jan. 14).
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened up the game on a 13-7 run. Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) capped off the opening run with three-ball from the right wing.
  • Tewes tried her luck on another triple at the 2:17 mark of the opening quarter, again finding the bottom of the net. She paced the Lady Knights with eight points in the first quarter; Gannon leading 20-11.
  • Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) began the second quarter with a layup and a three-pointer; pushing Gannon's lead out to 25-18.
  • Clarion began to claw its way back, however. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to one, 31-30, with 2:29 remaining before the half.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) added back-to-back buckets in the last minute of the quarter to give the Lady Knights a 35-30 lead at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Gannon edged out to a seven-point lead on a Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) three-ball at the 8:57 mark. It marked the largest second-half lead for Gannon.
  • Clarion's Tayor Moltz responded to the Rourke three-ball with a triple of her own. Moltz tallied 16 in the game for the Golden Eagles.
  • Clarion tied the game at 42 with a Jordan Bekelja three-pointer at the 4:21 mark of the quarter.
  • The fourth period began with a Tyra Polite three-pointer to give Clarion a 53-52 advantage, its first lead of the second half.
  • Gannon responded with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes and 30 seconds to reclaim a 59-55 lead headed into the final five minutes of play.
  • Clarion bounced back and took its final lead of the game on a Bekelja layup with 2:55 remaining, 65-63. Next possession down the floor, Bekelja hit another bucket to give the Golden Eagles a four point lead, 67-63.
  • Down five with 28 seconds remaining, Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) connected on a three-pointer to draw the Lady Knights to within two, 69-67.
  • Clarion hit all eight of its free throws down the stretch to pull out a 75-71 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Saunders posted her seventh double-double of the season, tallying 16 points and 11 rebounds for Gannon.
  • Braungart poured in a career-high 13 points for the Lady Knights.
  • Mitchell added a team-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
  • Gannon shot 24-of-57 (.421) from the field and 8-of-30 from three-point range (.267).
  • Clarion mustered 26-of-61 (.426) from the field and 12-of-37 (.324) from behind the arc.
  • The Lady Knights held a 37-32 edge in rebounding.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon hosted Clarion in the 10th Annual Pink Zone game.
  • Mitchell extended her conference-leading free-throw percentage to .880 after going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the game.
  • Mitchell has made the third-most free throws in the conference this season (81).
  • The Lady Knights lost their first game of the season when scoring at least 70 points (3-1 record).
  • Gannon is 2-3 when having a halftime lead.
