Manczka's Late Goal Pushes No. 21 Gannon Women's Soccer Team Past Seton Hill in Home Opener

  • The Short Story: Junior Hannah Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell)'s goal off a free kick from 20 yards out on the left side with 58 seconds left propelled the No. 21 Gannon women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory against Seton Hill Saturday night in the home opener at McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill struck first on an unassisted goal from Emily LoPresti in the 18th minute.
  • Gannon out-shot the Griffins 10-6 during the first half, but remained down a goal as the two teams went into halftime.
  • The Lady Knights put two quick goals together to forge ahead a little over halfway through the second half. Senior Courtney Edwards (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) tallied the tying goal in the 64th minute, scoring off an assist from freshman Brigid Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley).
  • Eight minutes and four seconds later, freshman Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) pushed the Lady Knights ahead 2-1 with an unassisted goal.
  • Seton Hill regrouped and forged the match's second tie in the 81st minute when Emma Bearinger took a pass from Bri Kostan and found the back of the net.
  • With overtime looming, Gannon produced a break down the left side when a Lady Knight was hauled down just outside the box. Manczka then blasted a free kick from 20 yards out on the left side past the Seton Hill goalkeeper and into the upper right corner with 58 seconds left.
  • The visiting Griffins received a corner kick late in regulation, but were unable to get a shot off during the final 58 seconds before falling by a 3-2 count.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon is ranked No. 21 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Top 25 Poll.
  • The Lady Knights out-shot the Griffins 19-9, including a 9-3 edge during the second half. The home squad also had fewer fouls by a 14-10 count.
  • The Griffins held a slight advantage in corner kicks (3-2).
  • Three different Lady Knights recorded a goal.
  • Sophomore Danitza Indacochea (Maple, Ontario /St. Joan of Arc) started between the pipes, making two saves while allowing one goal during the first half.
  • For the second consecutive match, head coach Colin Petersen split the goalkeeping duties. Senior Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario /Notre Dame C.S.S.) turned away one shot and allowed one score in 45 minutes after relieving Indacochea at halftime.

  • Gannon won its 14th consecutive regular-season home match dating back to the 2014 campaign.
  • Differ continued to add to her program record for career goalkeeper victories with her 26th.
  • Gannon out-shot its 18th consecutive opponent dating back to last season.
  • Edwards recorded her second career goal, but first since September 13, 2014.
  • Lewis netted her first career goal during her second contest in a Lady Knight uniform.
  • Manczka's game-winning goal was the first of her career. She has now tallied one score during each of her first three seasons.
