HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shippensburg jumped on Gannon early, scoring the first 17 points. The Red Raiders drove 59 yards on their opening possession for a touchdown and 7-0 lead.
  • The home squad increased its lead to 14-0 with an almost identical drive late in the first quarter. The Ship went 59 yards on nine plays this time, capped by a one-yard touchdown plunge with 31 seconds left in the opening quarter.
  • Shippensburg then took advantage of an unsuccessful fake punt by Gannon four plays into the second quarter to tack on a 43-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead.
  • Maybe the play that turned the game around came on the next kickoff. Junior Brandon Mansell (New Brighton, Pa./Blackhawk) returned the kickoff 82 yards to the Shippensburg nine-yard line.
  • On the next play, Phillips hit redshirt sophomore Eli Quinter (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) for a nine-yard touchdown pass. The score cut the deficit to 17-7 one minute and 58 seconds into the second quarter.
  • Gannon generated a monster drive after getting a defensive stop. The Golden Knights began on their one-yard line after a great punt, but proceeded to go 99 yards in 14 plays. Every yard was accounted for on the ground with the exception of a 25-yard pass. Redshirt senior Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East)'s eight-yard touchdown run capped the drive and brought the Golden Knights within 17-14 at the 3:59 mark of the first half.
  • The momentum continued in the second half. On the second play of Gannon's first drive after the break, Phillips hit junior Will Davis (Parma, Ohio/Holy Name) for an 84-yard touchdown pass that push the Golden Knights ahead 21-17 two minutes and 59 seconds into the third quarter.
  • The two teams then engaged in a defensive affair the rest of the way.
  • Shippensburg was threatening to regain the lead late in the third quarter, but senior Matthew Gawlik (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) forced a fumble that was recovered by senior Nathan Adams (Crozier, Va./Goochland) at the Gannon 36-yard line.
  • The turnover led to a 31-yard field goal by junior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) as time expired in the third quarter, sending the visitors into the final stanza with a 24-17 advantage.
  • Shippensburg reached Gannon territory during all three of its fourth-quarter possessions. The first drive ended on the Golden Knights' 31-yard line when sophomore Justin Brown (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and redshirt senior Christian Carpenter (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) stopped a rush on fourth-and-two.
  • The Red Raiders pulled within 24-20 after 33-yard field goal ended their second drive with 4:52 remaining.
  • Ship had one last chance when it regained possession at its own 17-yard line with 1:44 to play and no time-outs. The Red Raiders moved the ball to the Gannon 44-yard line, before junior Foster Reznor (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) intercepted a fourth-and-13 pass to seal the victory.
