Gannon Women's Water Polo Improves to 22-0 All-Time Against Penn State Behrend with 9-3 Victory

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team scored nine consecutive goals through the first three quarters and improved to 22-0 all-time against Penn State Behrend with a 9-3 victory Thursday night at the Junker Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Penn State Behrend needed only 24 seconds to get on the board when Maryn Horn found the back of the net.
  • However, it was all Gannon after that. The Lady Knights ripped off nine consecutive goals during the span of three quarters.
  • Junior Christine Uht (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), sophomore Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) and sophomore Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley Liberal Arts) answered the Behrend goal with scores to give Gannon a 3-1 lead after one quarter. Williamson's tally came with one second left on the clock.
  • Gannon shut out Penn State Behrend 4-0 during the second quarter. Sophomore Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Williamson, Barr and sophomore Grace Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) produced second-quarter goals that created a 7-1 halftime advantage.
  • The run continued with third-quarter scores from sophomore Lizzie Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and senior Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell). The pair of goals capped the run with Gannon holding a 9-1 lead midway through the third quarter.
  • Penn State Behrend stopped the onslaught when Lauren Wood scored with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter. The tally ended a scoreless streak of 21 minutes and 43 seconds.
  • The Lions added one more goal with 28 seconds left to account for the final 9-3 score.

MATCH NOTES
  • Barr and Williamson led seven Lady Knights in the scoring column with two goals each.
  • Grace Villano, Uht, Lizzie Rodriguez, Lazenby and Cooney chipped in one score each.
  • Barr led the defensive unit with six steals.
  • Lazenby added three steals and one assist.
  • Bednarek and Lizzie Rodriguez had two steals each.
