Gannon Men's Basketball Team Falls in Porreco Pride of Erie Game

  • The Short Story: The Mercyhurst men's basketball team shot 57 percent (16-28) during the first half while out-scoring Gannon 46-17 and defended the Porreco Pride of Erie Game trophy with a 76-47 victory Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst took control of the game early, using seven consecutive points to assume a 12-4 lead 4:30 into the contest.
  • Leading 12-6, the Lakers engineered a 20-4 run that lasted six minutes and 46 seconds. Gerrae Williams' triple gave the visitors a 32-10 advantage with 5:44 left in the first half.
  • The Mercyhurst lead ballooned to 41-13, before the Lakers went to the intermission with a 46-17 edge.
  • Gannon never got closer than 24 points during the second half.
  • Mercyhurst bumped its lead into the 30's after Kayode Ajenifuja's lay-up midway through the second half gave the Lakers a 62-32 difference.
  • The Hurst's largest advantage of the evening came at 74-38 with 3:47 remaining, before Gannon scored nine of the last 11 points to account for the final 76-47 score.

GAME NOTES
  • Senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) was the only Golden Knight to reach double digits in scoring, recording 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Gannon shot 36.2 percent (17-47) from the field, 33.3 percent (3-9) from three-point range and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the free throw line. 
  • Mercyhurst's Jean Onana received the Porreco Pride of Erie Game Changer Award after posting 23 points in 28 minutes, hitting 9-of-10 field goals and 4-of-5 three-pointers.
  • Williams was the only other Laker in double digits with 11 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
  • Mercyhurst shot 56 percent (28-50) from the floor, 47.8 percent (11-23) from behind the arc and 90 percent (9-10) from the charity stripe.
  • Fifteen Lakers saw playing action.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon concluded the 2015-16 campaign with a 7-19 record, missing the postseason for the first time since 2011-12.
  • Toupane reached double digits in scoring for the 10th straight game and 21st time this season.
  • Mercyhurst became the fourth Gannon opponent to shot 56 percent or better this season.
  • The Lakers' three offensive rebounds were the fewest against the Golden Knights since Clarion had three during a 78-71 home loss February 11, 2015.
  • Mercyhurst was the first Gannon opponent to have zero blocks since Pitt-Johnstown was held blockless during a 66-36 loss at the Hammermill Center on February 14, 2015.
  • The Lakers completed their first season sweep of Gannon since 2011-12 by winning for the fourth time in their last six trips to the Hammermill Center.
  • Wednesday was Senior Night as three-year team manager Max Seng, Cory Bailey (North East, Pa./North East), Tony Boykins (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix), Jon Dogbo (Paris, France/Redemption Christian (N.Y.) Academy) and Toupane were honored during Senior Night festivities prior to the game.
