Gannon Women's Volleyball Team Completes Season Sweep of Mercyhurst with Clean 3-0 Victory

ERIE Pa. - The Gannon Lady Knights saw a familiar foe enter the Hammermill Center on Tuesday night as the Mercyhurst Lakers made the three-mile trek across town in the final regular season home match of the season for Gannon. The Lady Knights fought hard for a 3-0 victory and took home the traveling trophy that the two teams play for each season.

It was the second sweep of the season for the Lady Knights over the Lakers. Gannon took Tuesday's match, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.

In set one, Gannon was trading the lead early with the Lakers. The Lady Knights took the lead for good with an Anne-Mari Kaur (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Lillekula Upper Secondary School) kill to put Gannon up 13-12 in the set. The Lady Knights went on a 12-6 run from there to win, 25-18.

Mercyhurst held a 10-8 lead in set two before a Lauren Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) kill began to swing the tide. Gannon tied the set at 11 and took the lead on a Carolyn Knollman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) service ace. Gannon ran away with the set from there, 25-17.

Gannon began set three with a 7-2 advantage before a Mercyhurst timeout. After the timeout, kills from Beka Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) and Lauren Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) extended the Gannon lead. Up 24-19, Gannon finished off the set with a Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) kill, winning, 25-19.

Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio /Solon) led the Lady Knights with 14 kills, a .400 hitting percentage and three digs.

Kren played in her 123rd match at Gannon, tying Lauren Sazama for fourth most matches played at GU. (records back to '02).

Gannon improves to 25-3 overall and 14-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Mercyhurst dips to 15-12, 7-9 in the conference.

Gannon travels to Slippery Rock and Edinboro this weekend in the final matches of the regular season, setting a potential battle for the top seed in the PSAC tournament on the final day. The Lady Knights and Fighting Scots are both tied with a conference-best 14-2 record. Gannon first battles Slippery Rock on Friday (Nov. 11) at 7 p.m. The match against Edinboro will take place on Saturday at 4 p.m.
