Gannon Volleyball made the three-mile trek across town on Tuesday (Oct. 11) evening to take on rival Mercyhurst in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division matchup. The Lady Knights dominated the Lakers, winning in three sets, 25-13, 25-21, 25-22.
The Lady Knights leaped out to a 10-4 advantage in set one before the Lakers called timeout. The timeout didn't do much to slow the GU momentum as Gannon went on an additional 5-1 run before Mercyhurst called its second timeout, down 15-5. The Lady Knights won the set, 25-13, on the back of nine team kills,
Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio /Solon) delivering five of them.
The Lakers responded early in set two. Mercyhurst jumped out to a 14-8 advantage before Gannon went on a 7-1 run of its own to take a 16-15 lead, capped by a
Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) kill. Gannon went on to win the set, 25-21.
Up 23-22 in set three,
Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and
Lauren Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) finished the match with two timely kills for the Lady Knights.
Gannon finished the match with a .267 hitting percentage, 32 kills, 47 digs, and 11 blocks.
Ansec led the team with 10 kills while adding four blocks on the night.
The Lady Knights lead the PSAC in hitting percentage (.245) and kills per set (13.58).
Kren passed Maggie Derosiers (2001-14) in the match for sixth all-time in sets played at Gannon as Kren played in her 408 set on Tuesday.
Gannon pushed its record to 17-2 overall, 6-1 in the PSAC.
Mercyhurst drops to 11-7, 3-4 in the conference.
