The Short Story: The Gannon softball team opened its home-and-home series with a sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opponent Slippery Rock Tuesday afternoon at GU Field. The Lady Knights earned a 9-2 win over The Rock in game one. Senior Jess Rectenwald (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) secured the Lady Knights' 12-4 six-inning victory in the nightcap with a walk-off RBI-single. Freshman Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) went a combined 5-for-6 in the doubleheader to lead the Lady Knights' offense, compiling five runs and three RBIs.
GAME ONE SCORE: at Gannon 9, Slippery Rock 2
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
- Slippery Rock opened the game with a 1-0 lead following their first at-bat. Gannon responded in the bottom half of the inning to capture a 2-1 advantage. With two outs and Martinez parked at first, junior Alyssa Bates (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) belted her sixth home run of the season over the left-field wall to push the Lady Knights ahead of The Rock.
- The Rock tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second, as the Lady Knights recaptured the lead in the bottom part of the inning. Junior Rachel deGuia (Canal Fulton, Ohio / Northwest) put the Lady Knights back in the lead, 3-2, with an RBI-double.
- In the bottom of the third, the Lady Knights tacked on four runs in the third to take a 7-2 lead. Redshirt senior Katie Dunn (Clarkston, Mich. / Troy) opened the Lady Knights' scoring with an RBI-single before deGuia drove in a pair of runs on a base hit. Freshman Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) closed the Lady Knights' offense with an RBI-single up the middle for a 7-2 lead.
- The Lady Knights knocked in a pair of runs in the fifth on back-to-back plays. An RBI-single up the middle by Martinez added a run as sophomore Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa. / Fox Chapel) belted an RBI-triple deep into right for a 9-2 GU lead. Sophomore starter Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) held The Rock scoreless in the next five innings to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES | GAME ONE
- Martinez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Both deGuia and Bates collected a pair of hits in the win. deGuia tallied three RBIs with Bates accounting for two RBIs.
- Bates recorded her sixth home run. Moran finished the game with a double, while Moran picked up her second triple of the season.
- Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit.
- The Lady Knights out-performed The Rock at the plate on a 13-4 hitting advantage.
- Gumbita (11-2) earned her fourth straight victory. In the complete game, she struck out 11 batters. The sophomore allowed two runs on four hits.
GAME TWO SCORE: at Gannon 12, Slippery Rock 4 (6 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
- Gannon answered Slippery Rock's one-run in the top of the first with a pair in the bottom half. Erasing The Rock's first-inning lead, Bates found the gap in right center with a two-RBI double for a Lady Knights' 2-1 lead.
- The Lady Knights erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second for a 7-1 lead. The rain began falling sideways, as the Lady Knights took advantage of the conditions. The Rock suffered three wild pitches and a passed ball in the inning with the Lady Knights' first run scored on one of the wild pitches. An RBI-double by Rectenwald scored the Lady Knights' second run for a 4-1 lead. Martinez hit an RBI-single to left before Moran hit an RBI-double in the gap between left center.
- The Rock cut into the Lady Knights' lead with three runs in the bottom of the third, placing the score at 7-4.
- Racing around the bases, Martinez crushed an RBI-triple into the center wall with Rectenwald scoring from second.
- In the next two and a half innings, the teams combined for just one hit. The lone hit in the stretch came courtesy of a single from Dunn.
- With the bases loaded, the Lady Knights' first tally came on a walk to deGuia for a 9-4 lead. Salerno smashed a two-RBI single up the middle to score junior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) and freshman Kaylyn Shaughnessy (Barrie, Ontario / Bear Creek Secondary), moving the Lady Knights' closer to capturing a walk-off win.
- Rectenwald achieved just that on the next at bat. The senior slid an RBI-single through the right-center gap to score deGuia for the Lady Knights' 12-4 victory over The Rock.
GAME NOTES | GAME TWO
- Rectenwald went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Bates accounted for three RBIs in the win.
- Martinez went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, including two runs and two RBIs. Salerno collected two RBIs and a run scored.
- The Lady Knights outhit The Rock, 12-4.
- Rectenwald (7-3) earned the complete-game win, fanning four batters. She allowed four runs on four hits.
