The Short Story: The Gannon softball team ended its time at the National Training Center Saturday with a 9-4 loss to Saint Anselm. Senior
Meghan Cunha (Geneva, Ohio / Edgewood) went an impressive 4-for-4 at the plate along with a run and an RBI. Among the Lady Knights' 11 total games during their trip south, the team posted a 5-1 mark against NCAA Atlantic Region opponents.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with two runs coming off RBI-singles. The Hawks added a run to their total in the third on a Gannon throwing error for a 4-0 advantage.
- The Hawks pushed their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run shot by Hannah Bryne to left center.
- The Lady Knights broke their scoring drought in the top of the sixth with three runs to cut into the Hawks' lead, 7-3. Redshirt senior
Katie Dunn (Clarkston, Mich. / Troy) opened the Lady Knights' scoring with a two-RBI double to center field, driving in junior
Alyssa Bates (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) and Cunha. Later in the inning, freshman
Casie Stark (Kirtland, Ohio / Kirtland) crossed home on a centerfield error.
- Saint Anselm answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to push ahead 9-3. Cunha closed out the Lady Knights' scoring with an RBI-double up the middle as the Hawks captured the 9-4 victory.
GAME NOTES- Cunha went a perfect 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
- Freshman
Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) and Bates each went 2-for-4. Dunn collected a pair of RBI on a double in the sixth.
- Junior
Alison Benz (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Mount Mercy Academy) (3-3) allowed seven earned runs off 15 hits. Benz also collected two strikeouts.
- Gannon recorded three errors with Saint Anselm tallying two.
- Offensively, the Hawks finished with a game-best 15 hits. The Lady Knights compiled nine hits.
- In the Lady Knights' 11 total games during their stay in the Sunshine State, the team managed to post a 5-1 record against fellow NCAA Atlantic Region opponents.
