Gannon Men's Basketball Team Drops Defensive Battle at No. 18 Indiana (Pa.)

  • The Short Story: The No. 18 Indiana (Pa.) men's basketball team forced 25 Gannon turnovers and shot 52 percent (12-23) during the second half to post a 64-54 victory Saturday night before 2,416 fans at the Kovalchick Complex. In the process, the Crimson Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak in the all-time series and assumed sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to gain the upper hand during the first half which featured nine lead changes and two ties.
  • IUP's biggest first-half lead came after an opening 7-2 run.
  • Gannon's biggest lead of the opening half was 21-16 after six consecutive points by senior Rich Austin (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius). The one-man run consisted of two lay-ups and a pair of free throws.
  • Indiana (Pa.) held Gannon scoreless for the final five minutes and 55 seconds, ending the half with a 7-0 blitz to assume a 25-23 lead at the intermission. The Golden Knights went 0-4 from the floor with seven turnovers during the scoreless stretch.
  • A three-pointer by Jeremy Jeffers and two free throws by Devante Chance later pushed the IUP lead to 44-36 with 12:12 remaining in the game.
  • Gannon answered with eight consecutive points to knot the contest at 44. Senior A'Darius Porter (Stockbridge, Ga./Woodland) ignited the rally with a jumper, before junior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) hit back-to-back three-pointers to draw even with 8:59 to play.
  • IUP countered with seven straight points of its own and never trailed again. Shawn Dyer answered Toupane's triples with one of his own 24 seconds later, starting the run.
  • The Crimson Hawks led by as many as 12 points (61-49) with 2:05 remaining, before settling for a 64-54 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest featured nine lead changes and three ties.
  • Toupane led Gannon in scoring for the first time this season with a season-high 16 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots in 25 minutes of action. His previous season-high was 11 points against California (Pa.) on January 22.
  • Gannon shot 42.9 percent (21-49) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-16) from three-point range and 58.3 percent (7-12) from the free throw line.
  • Chance led all scorers with 18 points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals while playing all 40 minutes. Dyer was the only other Crimson Hawk in double digits with 15.
  • Indiana (Pa.) shot 45.1 percent (23-51) from the floor, including a 52.2-percent (12-23) clip during the second half. The Crimson Hawks shot 30.4 percent (7-23) from behind the arc and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon committed 25 turnovers that led to 20 IUP points. It represented the most turnovers by the Golden Knights since having 25 during a 68-54 victory December 3 against Clarion.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Indiana (Pa.) is ranked No. 18 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top 25 Poll.
  • The Crimson Hawks leapfrogged the Golden Knights and moved into sole possession of first place in the PSAC Western Division with Saturday's victory. IUP (14-3) now leads Gannon (14-4) by one-half game. The Golden Knights lead third-place Mercyhurst (13-5) by one full game.
  • IUP snapped a four-game losing skid against Gannon, tying the all-time series at 20.
  • Blazek moved past Mike Runski (1983-87) and into 11th place on Gannon's all-time scoring chart with 1,423 career points.
  • IUP's 10-point win was the largest margin of victory by either team in the all-time series since a 65-50 Crimson Hawk home victory during the 2011-12 season. The previous five encounters have been decided by single digits.
  • Blazek moved into a tie with Chris Hollan (1988-90) for fourth place all-time at Gannon with his 178 career three-pointer.
