The Short Story: The Gannon women's basketball team closed the regular season with a 69-48 victory over Seton Hill Wednesday evening at the Hammermill Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action. The game celebrated Senior Night for Brittany Batts (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County), Nettie Blake (Jersey City, N.J./Marist), Candice Hendricks (Randallstown, Md. / McDonogh) and Mollie Sebald (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name). The Lady Knights earned their fifth consecutive victory as the team earned the Western Division's third seed in the PSAC Tournament. Blake led the Lady Knights' effort with 13 points and 14 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season and 30th of her career, while registering her 1,000th career rebound.
 
SENIOR CLASS OF 2015
- The Gannon women's basketball program celebrated the careers of Batts, Blake, Hendricks and Sebald between the women's and men's game this evening. The men's senior class was also honored during the ceremony including Rich Austin, Adam Blazek, A'Darius Porter, Girbran Smith and Raphell Thomas-Edwards.
- This year's Lady Knights' senior class has captured 101 career victories during the last four seasons including four PSAC Tournament appearances, a PSAC Western Division regular-season title, three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance.
- The four Lady Knights have appeared in 9,581 minutes in 462 combined games. Collectively, they have scored 3,980 points.
- Entering this evening's games, the nine men's and women's seniors combined to score over 7,100 points, register over 3,300 rebounds, create 1,100 assists, block almost 200 shots and hit over 660 three-pointers during their collegiate careers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Seton Hill held the lead for most of the opening 10 minutes of the contest. Trailing 11-8, the Lady Knights locked the game at 11 each on a three from Hendricks with 15:38 remaining. The Griffins managed to push their lead to 18-17 on a three from Hallie Torris with 9:50 left, which marked the last lead for Seton Hill.
- Answering on the Lady Knights' next possession, Blake went inside with a layup to open a 9-0 run to take a 19-18 advantage. Another Blake layup followed by a Hendricks jumper was capped by a three from junior Morgan Neighbors (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) for a 26-18 lead with 7:14 remaining in the first half.
- Another three from Neighbors with six minutes left began a GU string of seven unanswered points. Neighbors cut inside for her fifth point in the Lady Knights' run with Blake connecting on two free-throw attempts for a 33-20 lead with just under four minutes remaining.
- Coming out of the break with a 39-25 advantage, the Lady Knights scored 12 of the first 14 points to begin the second half. Just nine seconds in, Sebald struck with a layup off a feed from Blake. After a pair of empty attempts by the Griffins, Batts nailed a three for a 44-25 lead. A steal by sophomore Brianna Brennan (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) led to a Sebald layup. A second Sebald bucket gave way to a three from Batts as the Lady Knights nearly doubled up on the Griffins, 51-27, with 16:30 remaining.
- Both teams fell into a lull for a span of over seven minutes. During the stretch, the teams combined for just nine points. The Griffins managed to outscore the Lady Knights, 7-2.
- With four minutes remaining in regulation, the Lady Knights pushed their lead back into the 20s. Starting with a converted free-throw attempt by junior Amanda Berchtold (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep), the Lady Knights went on a 9-0 run heading into the final two minutes. Hendricks, Berchtold and Blake each accounted for three points during the span as the Lady Knights sealed the 69-48 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
- Hendricks led the Lady Knights with a game-high 15 points to come within one point of a season high for the senior. She connected on 6-of-8 attempts from the floor and went a perfect 2-for-2 from the foul line. The senior also added four rebounds in 21 minutes.
- Blake followed Hendricks with 13 points and a game-best 14 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season and 30th of her career. Blake played in 29 minutes, while registering an assist. She became the third Lady Knight to reach 1,000 career boards pushing her total to 1,004.
- Batts also reached double figures with 10 points. She also recorded a rebound and three assists in a team-high 35 minutes.
- Shooting 4-for-6 on the evening, Sebald tallied eight points and added four rebounds, two steals and a block in 17 minutes.
- Neighbors scored 12 points in 23 minutes. She connected on a pair of threes and posted two steals and two assists.
- For the second straight game, the Lady Knights controlled the glass by double figures. GU registered a 48-20 advantage with Blake leading the way with 14 boards followed by junior Jennie Thies (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) with seven rebounds.
- The Lady Knights shot above 45 percent for the third consecutive game. For the evening, the Lady Knights performed at a clip of 47.3 percent (26-55) from floor. The Griffins hit on 33.3 percent (17-51) of their chances from the field.
- The Griffins were led by Kelly Brennan with 13 points. She entered the game averaging 26.3 points per contest in the last three contests. Jenna Kaufman followed Brennan's effort with 10 points.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Gannon remains unbeaten against Seton Hill in the all-time series with a 6-0 mark. Among the six wins, three have come on home court at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights have won each game by double figures.
- Since the Griffins joined the PSAC last season, the Lady Knights have swept both regular-season series.
- Earlier in the season, the Lady Knights captured an 81-62 victory over host Seton Hill Jan. 24, at the McKenna Center. Outscoring the Griffins by a 41-24 advantage, the Lady Knights used a strong-second half performance to seal the win.
- When leading at the half, GU improved to 17-0 this season.
- GU has won 13 of their last 15 games, including five straight in its current stretch.
- For the 13th season in program history, the Lady Knights the 20-win milestone.
- In the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings, Gannon is sixth.
- Blake captured moved her career rebound total to 1004 to become the third Lady Knight in program history to record 1,000 career rebounds. She currently ranks third on the all-time list.
- Sebald moved closer to 1,000 career points with her nine-point performance. The senior needs 36 points to become the 27th Lady Knight to reach the career milestone.
- At the Hammermill Center this season, the Lady Knights hold a 12-1 record. The Maroon and Gold have won 40 of their last 42 games at home.
- The Lady Knights will make their fourth consecutive appearance at the PSAC Tournament. In addition, GU will compete in the conference championship for the sixth time in seven seasons since joining the PSAC in 2008-09.
 
UP NEXT
Third-seed Gannon will host sixth-seed Slippery Rock at the Hammermill Center in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament Saturday, Feb. 28. The Western Division showdown is set to tip at 2 p.m.
