No. 1 Gannon Women's Soccer Team Falls for First Time In Regular-Season Finale at ESU; Awaits PSAC Quarterfinal Opponent

  • The Short Story: The East Stroudsburg women's soccer team exploded for four second-half goals in the span of 27 minutes and 23 seconds to hand top-ranked Gannon its first defeat of the season by a 4-2 count Friday afternoon in the regular-season finale played at ESU's Eiler-Martin Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon assumed 1-0 halftime lead after senior Amanda Gallant's (Brampton, Ontario/Cardinal Leger SS) header into the net off a corner kick by senior Mani Brueckner (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) in the 23rd minute.
  • East Stroudsburg broke open an evenly-played contest midway through the second half. Sammi Jo Hughes tied the match in the 61st minute, before Hannah Gombos put the Warriors in front 4:19 later.
  • The home squad extended its lead to 4-1 on goals from Shea Neal in the 73rd minute and Brielyn Hackett in the 79th minute.
  • Gannon managed a second goal when senior Kaitlyn Kissell (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored off a corner kick from senior Sammy Valloud (Erie, Pa./McDowell) with 8:21 remaining.
  • Neither team was able to produce a shot the remainder of the way, before East Stroudsburg secured the 4-2 victory.

  • Gannon has been ranked No. 1 in the last four National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 Polls, representing its first No. 1 ranking in the program's 29-year history. The Lady Knights have been tabbed No. 1 in the last seven NSCAA Atlantic regional rankings, as well as the initial NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released last Wednesday.
  • The Lady Knights held advantages in shots (15-14), corner kicks (12-7) and fouls (8-6).
  • East Stroudsburg's four goals were the most by a Gannon opponent since a 4-0 loss at California (Pa.) on September 28, 2011.
  • Gannon gave up more goals during Friday's match than during the previous 10 matches combined.
  • Junior Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame C.S.S.) made five saves despite losing in goal for the first time since a 3-0 loss at West Chester in the PSAC Quarterfinals on November 4, 2014. Friday's decision snapped a 17-match win streak for Differ, who made at least five saves in a match for the third time this season.
  • Gannon dropped to 0-4 all-time at East Stroudsburg, falling to 0-4-1 overall during its last five matches against the Warriors.
