Gannon Football Team Sets School Record for Margin of Victory in 48-0 Shutout at Cheyney (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 48, at Cheyney 0
  • Records: Gannon (2-0, 1-0 PSAC), Cheyney (0-2, 0-1 PSAC)
  • Location: Cheyney, Pa. – O'Shields-Stevenson Stadium
  • The Short Story: Gannon took control early with a 35-0 halftime advantage and coasted to its largest margin of victory in school history. The Golden Knights had two tailbacks reach the 100-yard plateau. The Gannon defensive unit held Cheyney to 19 rushing yards, 29 passing yards and 48 yards of total offense. As a result, the Golden Knights are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2010.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After losing the ball during its opening possession with an interception, Gannon scored a touchdown during six of its next seven possessions to begin the runaway.
  • Gannon's first score consisted of 10 consecutive running plays. Junior Brock Jones (Peninsula, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) picked up the first 33 yards on six carries. Senior Alex Papson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with three straight carries for 20 yards, before Jones capped the drive with a 14-yard score with 5:25 left in the first quarter.
  • A blocked punt started Gannon's second drive at the Cheyney 36-yard line. Much like the first drive, the Golden Knights only picked up yards on running plays. With the exception of a three-yard run by redshirt junior Liam Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio/Leipsic Local) and a Cheyney personal foul penalty, redshirt sophomore Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East) chewed up the remaining 20 yards on four carries. His first career touchdown run from five yards out pushed the lead to 14-0 with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter.
  • Three consecutive touchdowns during the final five minutes of the second quarter put the game away. All three drives consisted of only run plays. After a 25-yard punt return by junior Quad Law (Donora, Pa./Ringgold), six run plays by Jones produced a short 24-yard scoring drive that pushed the lead to 21-0 with 4:40 remaining in the second quarter.
  • One play was all that Gannon needed on its next drive. It was a 54-yard strike from Nadler to true freshman Will Davis (Parma, Ohio/Holy Name) for a 28-0 edge with 3:16 on the clock.
  • Gannon then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Cheyney 31-yard line. Four straight rushes by Jones chewed up those 31 yards and put the game out of reach at 35-0 with 1:30 left in the first half.
  • The scoring summary was completed with a Jones four-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a Johnson one-yard burst in the fourth frame.

GAME NOTES
  • Johnson rushed for a career-high 110 yards and two touchdowns. He had not received a collegiate carry prior to Saturday's game at Cheyney.
  • Jones recorded his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game with 111 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. His four touchdowns tied a school record set by Jansen Jones against Edinboro last season.
  • Nadler finished 5-of-8 for 77 yards and one touchdown. His previous career low for pass attempts was 16 against Seton Hill on November 2, 2013. The lack of a need for a throwing game also produced his career lows in pass completions and yards, surpassing his nine completions against Seton Hill on November 2, 2013 and his 79 yards against Clarion on September 22, 2012.
  • Davis made his first career catch during the second quarter, resulting in a 54-yard touchdown reception.
  • Sophomore Kailan Chavis (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) recorded his first career interception during the third quarter.
  • Redshirt junior Mike Phillips' (Bowie, Md./Bowie) blocked punt during the first quarter was Gannon's first blocked punt since October 15, 2011 against Lock Haven.
  • Gannon converted 7-of-13 third-down opportunities.
  • The Golden Knights' 69-play package included 61 running plays and eight passing plays.
  • Gannon ended the game with 24 consecutive run plays. The Golden Knights also had a stretch of 13 consecutive runs during the second quarter and 11 straight runs during the first quarter.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2010. The Golden Knights haven't started 3-0 since 1994.
  • Gannon has out-scored its first two opponents 71-7. It represents the largest scoring difference during the first two games in school history.
  • Gannon recorded the largest margin of victory in school history, surpassing a 47-0 victory against Millersville on September 17, 2011.
  • Gannon held Cheyney to 48 yards of total offense, narrowly missing the school record of 45 produced by Defiance on October 6, 1949.
  • Cheyney's 29 passing yards were the fewest by an opponent since St. Joseph's (Ind.) had 27 on September 22, 2001.
  • Cheyney's 19 rushing yards were the fewest by an opponent since Lock Haven had minus 15 on October 15, 2011.
  • Gannon put two running backs over 100 rushing yards for the 16th time in program history, but the first time since Jon Richardson (115) and Zack Boedicker (108) performed the feat against Slippery Rock on October 17, 2009.
  • Cheyney's 46 total plays were the second-fewest by an opponent in program history, sitting behind Kentucky Wesleyan's 45 on October 2, 1999.
  • Gannon's 35 first-half points fell three points shy of the school record (38) accomplished three times.
  • Cheyney's six first downs were the second-fewest by an opponent in program history, behind only Adrian's four on November 17, 1950.
  • Gannon moves to 1-0 in PSAC action as crossover games are being counted in the league standings this year for the first time.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home Saturday, September 20 against Kutztown. The PSAC crossover is scheduled for 12 noon at Gannon University Field.
  • Kutztown dismantled 20th-ranked Indiana (Pa.) 44-7 Saturday afternoon at home. In the process, the Golden Bears evened their record at 1-1 following a 37-26 loss at Slippery Rock during the opening weekend.
  • Gannon dropped a 27-24 decision to Kutztown during the 2010 regular-season finale at Gannon University Field in the only previous meeting between the two programs.
