The Short Story: The Gannon women's volleyball team swept visiting Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division opponent Indiana (Pa.) Friday evening at the Hammermill Center. Marking their 11th straight win, the Lady Knights clinched the sweep by set scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-12.
THE BASICS- Senior
Maggie Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio / Hoover) led the Lady Knights for the second straight match recording 15 kills with eight digs. Also reaching double digits was sophomore
Jordyn Thiery (Cincinnati, Ohio / McAuley), who compiled 11 kills and 12 digs for her third double-double of the season.
- Senior
Megan Wendel (Aurora, Ohio / Kenston) registered 32 assists. Attacking at a clip of .833, Wendel added five kills and four digs.
- Senior
Taryn Graham (Huron, Ohio / Huron) led the defensive attack with 17 digs.
- The match featured no lead changes and only one tied score in the opening set.
- The Lady Knights recorded their second-best attack percentage of the season at .387. The Lady Knights opened the set at .421 and concluded with a match-best .433.
HOW IT HAPPENED- After the Lady Knights scored the first two points, the Crimson Hawks answered back to tie the set at 2-2, which marked the only tied score in the match. The Lady Knights erupted on an 11-2 run including four kills by Desrosiers for a 13-4 lead. Off an IUP attack error, the Lady Knights pushed their lead to double digits, 16-6. The Crimson Hawks did not go away without a fight, pulling within six of the Lady Knights off four straight points, 18-12. Down the stretch, Desrosiers scored three of the final four points in the set to capture the GU 25-16 win.
- In the second set, the Lady Knights pushed their lead to 16-8 on a 10-4 run with six points off Crimson Hawk errors. Holding a 20-12 lead, the Lady Knights capitalized off four IUP errors capped by a Desrosiers' kill for a 25-14 win and 2-0 commanding lead in the match.
- To open the third set, the Lady Knights raced out to a 6-1 lead over the Crimson Hawks. Once again, four IUP errors led to the Lady Knights' advantage. Thiery recorded two service aces to push the Lady Knights' lead to 10-2. Thiery struck again to hand the Lady Knights' a double-digit lead, 15-5. Surrendering four straight points to the Crimson Hawks late in the set, the Lady Knights regrouped on a timeout with the score at 22-12. Out of the timeout, the Lady Knights closed the set with three straight points off kills by Desrosiers, Thiery and Wendel for the 25-12 win and sweep of IUP.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE- The Lady Knights improved to 34-8 in the all-time series with the Crimson Hawks, winning six straight matches.
- Clarion dropped a 3-2 loss to Mercyhurst this evening, as the Lady Knights moved into a tie for first place with both teams sharing a 17-2 conference record. Gannon will square off against Clarion Nov. 1, in a battle for the top spot in the division.
- At the Hammermill Center this season, the Lady Knights improved to 30-1 in sets played.
