Gannon Football Team Breaks Records Galore in 58-28 Victory Against Seton Hill (Video)



THE RUNDOWN

    The Short Story: Gannon broke school records for total points, total yards, passing yards, second-half points, third-quarter points, total first downs and passing first downs en route to a 58-28 victory against Seton Hill Saturday afternoon at a windy Gannon University Field. Senior Justin Caliste (Roseville, Calif./Oakmont) also became the program's all-time leader in receiving yards (2,220) while resetting his own single-game reception record with 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened the game with an eight-play, 70-yard drive the ended with redshirt junior Liam Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio/Leipsic Local) connecting with freshman Brandon Mansell (New Brighton, Pa./Blackhawk) from 25 yards out for a 7-0 lead 5:48 into the contest.
  • Seton Hill tied the game at seven with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Drew Jackson to Jarvis McClam at the 5:23 mark of the first quarter. It started a run that saw the Griffins score touchdowns during four of their final six possessions of the first half.
  • Trailing 14-7, Gannon drew even after Nadler dropped a perfect ball into redshirt Jesstin Hamm (Harwood, Md./DeMatha Catholic) who made an even better catch in the right corner of the endzone and dropped a foot down before going out-of-bounds with 7:21 left in the first half.
  • Seton Hill sandwiched a 27-yard field goal from freshman Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) with two more touchdowns to assume a 28-17 lead at the intermission.
  • The final score of the half came with eight seconds remaining. Seton Hill drove 72 yards in only 93 seconds with eight straight passes. The final one resulted in a three-yard touchdown catch from Jackson to Eric Brown.
  • Gannon exploded out of the halftime locker room with six touchdowns in eight possessions. The Golden Knights turned the ball over once on downs and punted once.
  • Caliste caught three touchdown passes during the third quarter. The scores were from 48 yards out at the 12:21 mark, seven yards out at the 7:13 mark and another seven-yard catch at the 3:18 mark. The trio of touchdown catches quickly turned an 11-point halftime deficit into a 37-28 lead.
  • Junior Brock Jones' (Peninsula, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) two-yard touchdown run capped a 27-point third quarter with 1:29 showing on the clock, pushing the advantage to 44-28.
  • Nadler tacked on two rushing touchdowns during the fourth quarter from one yard out at the 10:08 mark and six yards out with 2:37 to play to account for the final 58-28 score.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon broke the school record for points (58, previous record of 56 vs. Ashland in 1950), total yards (691, previous record of 639 vs. Lake Erie in 2013), passing yards (494, previous record of 428 at Slippery Rock in 2012), total first downs (35, previous record of 32 vs. Tiffin in 2002) and passing first downs (22, previous record of 18 vs. Edinboro in 2013).
  • Caliste broke the school record for single-game receptions with 15, breaking the previous record of 12 performed three times. He accomplished the feat twice against Slippery Rock in 2012 and Kutztown this season. Gannon Hall of Famer Lee Castana also had 12 receptions against Canisius in 1997.
  • Mansell's touchdown reception in the first quarter was the first of his career.
  • Nadler broke the school record for passing yards with 494, breaking his previous record of 428 set against Mercyhurst in 2012.
  • Jones recorded his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season, leaving him one game shy of Sterling Pierce's single-season record of eight set in 1998.
  • Gannon broke the school record for second-half points with 41, breaking the previous mark of 35 at Lock Haven in 2010.
  • The Golden Knights broke the school record for third-quarter points with 27, breaking the previous mark of 21 set four other times.
  • Caliste's career-high 227 receiving yards represented the third-highest single-game total in school history. His three receiving touchdowns tied a school single-game record accomplished four previous times.
  • Hamm recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season with eight catches for 143 yards.
  • Caliste broke Gannon's single-game all-purpose record with 305 yards, surpassing Jon Richardson's previous mark of 286 against Ashland in 2007.
  • Junior Matt Astorino (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) tied a career-high with a team-high seven tackles.
  • Gannon held the ball for 41 minutes and 29 seconds, including 21 minutes and 52 seconds of the second half. It was the Golden Knights' best time of possession since having a 41:46 mark against Edinboro on October 12, 2013.
  • Head coach Brad Rzyczycki's club scored during all six possessions that reached the red zone.
  • Gannon was whistled for 14 penalties resulting in 100 yards. It represented the most penalties since being tagged for 14 against Mercyhurst on October 10, 2009.
  • Saturday's contest was played with wind gust up to 30 miles per hour out of the west. Gannon had the wind at its back during the first and third quarters. Seton Hill had the advantage during the second and fourth quarters.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Caliste became Gannon's all-time leader in receiving yards with 2,220 career yards, passing Sam Culberth's (2002-06) record of 2,099 yards.
  • Jones has rushed for 1,201 yards through eight games which already ranks second all-time at Gannon. He needs 388 to break the school single-season record of 1,588 set by Jansen Jones last year.
  • Gannon clinched its second consecutive winning season. The Golden Knights have posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2009 and 2010 squads went 6-5.
  • Hamm jumped Pat Cain (2000-03) and into seventh place on Gannon's all-time receiving yards chart with 1,281 career yards. He moved into a tie with Levar Goff (2006-10) for ninth place on Gannon's all-time reception chart with 78.

  • Gannon concludes the road portion of the regular season Saturday, November 1 at California (Pa.). Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Listed among others receiving votes in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) national rankings, California (Pa.) holds a one-game lead over Gannon for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division.
  • Gannon is 0-6 all-time against California, including a 35-7 setback last season on the Vulcans' home turf.
