HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa/St. Benedict School) got Gannon running early, scoring off a throw-in by senior Alex Perri (Valencia, Pa./Mars). Bennett took the pass at the top of the box on the right side, turned and fired a shot inside the left post 2:21 into the contest.
  • Lock Haven answered in the 29th minute. Asher Klahold dropped a lob pass from 40 yards out into the middle where Zach Hommey headed the ball inside the left post for the tying score.
  • Gannon went to the intermission with momentum after Bennett tallied his second goal of the half with 2:14 remaining. Redshirt junior Skhosi Mgobozi (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. David's Marist Inanda) won a free ball with a tremendous effort, heading the ball up to freshman Alejandro Ferrero (Caspe, Spain/I.E.S. Mar de Aragon) on the left side. As the Lock Haven goalkeeper came out of the net, Ferrero crossed a pass to Bennett who scored into the right side of the net for a 2-1 lead.
  • Lock Haven came out of the halftime locker room with a flurry of offense. Consecutive passes by Jacob Oldaker and Ben Weaver led to a one-on-one opportunity for Troy Amspacher who converted into the lower left corner one minute into the second half.
  • The Bald Eagles then forged ahead in the 58th minute. Asher Klahold's throw-in from the 40-yard line went through the defense, leading to another one-on-one scoring chance for Colt Brackbill. He also converted for the go-ahead goal.
  • Gannon dominated the remainder of the match. Freshman Ted Martin (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) finally got the tying goal with 9:23 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Sergio Kobowane (Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edward VII) feed Perri, who sent a pass across the box. The Lock Haven goalkeeper deflected the pass with a diving attempt, but Martin was there to knock the loose ball into the net.
  • The Golden Knights took the first four shots of overtime, including a header by Bennett that was kicked away from an empty net by a Lock Haven defender in the opening 90 seconds.
  • The Bald Eagles' only shot of the extra period was the game-winner. A Tyler Sablyak pass got Amspacher behind the Gannon defense at the 20-yard line and forced the goalkeeper out of the net. Amspacher dribbled around the keeper to the right and scored the decisive goal into an open net with 1:25 remaining in the first overtime period.
