WyKevin Bazemore (Winston-Salem State)
ERIE, Pa. - All-Tournament selection
Tee Talley (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) recorded his first career double-double with season-highs in both points (20) and rebounds (11) to propel the Gannon men's basketball team to an unexpected 81-58 rout of Barton Saturday night in the consolation game of the 40th annual Porreco Cup. The 2007 NCAA Division II National Champion Bulldogs are coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
After failing to get out of the 50's during five of its first six games, Gannon has posted a season-high in scoring during back-to-back games. The Golden Knights took control of Saturday's consolation game late in the first half and never looked back in their largest margin of victory since an 82-59 win against California (Pa.) on January 19 at the Hammermill Center.
Barton converted a three-pointer eight seconds into the contest and raced out to a 14-6 lead after five minutes and five seconds. Gannon responded with a 9-2 run that began with an
Adam Blazek (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) three-pointer. Consecutive jumpers from
Rogerio Livramento (Central Falls, R.I./Central Falls) and
Raphell Thomas-Edwards (Leicester, England/The Gateway School) brought the Golden Knights within 16-15 at the 11:02 mark.
C.J. Oldham's (Solon, Ohio/Solon) jumper later gave Gannon its first lead of the evening at 21-19 with 7:30 remaining in the first half. Barton regained the lead one more time after Jordan Sharpe's triple pushed the Bulldogs in front 22-21. But
A'Darius Porter's (Stockbridge, Ga./Woodland) lay-up 26 seconds later gave the Golden Knights a lead they would never relinquish. The basket ignited a 19-7 run during the final 5:30 of the first half.
Blazek accounted for eight of the 19 points during what proved to be the decisive run, followed by Talley with five points and Oldham with four. Two Blazek free throws with two seconds remaining sent the home squad into the break with a 40-29 advantage.
Barton cut the deficit to single digits twice during the opening two minutes of the second half, before Gannon held a double-digit lead for the final 17 minutes and 50 seconds. The Golden Knights enjoyed their biggest lead at 67-40 after two freebies from Livramento at the 9:10 mark. The difference never dipped below 21 points the rest of the way.
Blazek led all scorers on both sides with 24 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals. The junior guard reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season and 12th time during his collegiate career. Sixteen of his 24 points came during the first half when Gannon took control of the game.
Talley recorded his first career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Both figures represented season-highs.
Brandon Emmitt (Akron, Ohio/Akron Garfield) scored a career-high 12 points to go along with five assists and five rebounds. Oldham rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Gannon shot 50 percent (27-54) from the field for the second consecutive game, 47.1 percent (8-17) from three-point range and 76 percent (19-25) from the free throw line. In the process, the Golden Knights out-rebounded their eighth consecutive opponent by a 42-30 count.
Chris Flemmings was the only Barton player to reach double digits with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The Bulldogs shot 35.6 percent (21-59) from the floor, 40 percent (8-20) from behind the arc and 47.1 percent (8-17) from the charity stripe.
Gannon evened its record at 4-4 overall while snapping a brief two-game losing streak. Barton fell to 4-7 with its third consecutive setback.
Saturday's championship between Shepherd and Winston-Salem State turned into one of the best games to ever be played at the Hammermill Center. The title bout featured 21 lead changes, nine ties, a clutch game-tying three-pointer and numerous momentum swings.
Winston-Salem State's Tyre Desmore had two points through the first 39 minutes and 59 seconds, but his long three-pointer from the right wing with one second left in regulation tied the game at 92 and forced overtime.
However, the shot didn't seem to faze Shepherd. Porreco Cup Most Outstanding Player Morgan McDonald opened the extra session with five consecutive points. The junior nailed a three-pointer 45 seconds into overtime and converting a jumper to give the Rams a 97-92 edge.
Winston-Salem State remained within 99-96, but Shepherd got a key lay-up from Marcus Pilgrim with 30 seconds left before icing a 103-96 overtime victory with two free throws from Brantley Osborne.
The dynamic duo of Preston Ross and WyKevin Bazemore was almost unstoppable for Winston-Salem State. Ross poured in a game-high 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Bazemore recorded a double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
Shepherd put five players in double digits, led by Osborne's 22 points. McDonald followed with 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
The 40th Annual Porreco Cup Most Outstanding Player was awarded to McDonald who recorded 37 points and 14 points in two games, hitting 16-of-26 shots. The all-tournament team was completed with Gannon's
Tee Talley (31 points | 17 rebounds), Winston-Salem State's Preston Ross (38 points | seven rebounds), Shepherd's Brantley Osborne (44 points | 14 assists | eight rebounds) and Winston-Salem State's WyKevin Bazemore (38 points | 26 rebounds | eight assists).
Gannon returns to action Tuesday, December 17 against Mansfield at the Hammermill Center. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover match-up is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
