ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team finished off a perfect 4-0 weekend on Saturday with two more wins at the PSAC-WVIAC Crossover Tournament. The Lady Knights earned 3-0 wins over Seton Hill (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) and Alderson-Broaddus (25-21, 25-11, 25-17), finishing the weekend without dropping a set to WVIAC teams.
"After a tough opening weekend in St. Louis, we really needed a 4-0 performance to get back on track," said head coach Matt Darling. "We had great individual performances from Kara and Morgan today, and I thought that Alex ran the offense very well. "
The Lady Knights opened the day battling back and forth with the Griffins of Seton Hill. Gannon trailed 9-8 in the first set before rolling off an 11-2 run. Gannon was able to extend its lead by taking advantage of miscues from Seton Hill and three straight aces from Maggie Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio / Hoover). The Lady Knights earned the 25-14 win after earning the final five points on kills from four different players.
Everything was clicking in the second set for Gannon who hit .478, committing just one attack error. Sarah Glancy (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) helped the Lady Knights to a 5-0 lead after recording three straight service aces. Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio / New Knoxville) added four kills while Kara Cullen (Marstons Mills, Mass. / Barnstable) chipped in with three.
The third set featured a closer score, but the Lady Knights were able to finish off the match on an 8-3 run to earn the win. Megan Wendel (Aurora, Ohio / Kenston) dished out 13 assists in the final set. Gannon totaled 17 kills in the set, with Courney Cook (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / St. Peter Chanel) and Chelsea Barrett (Coloma, Mich. / Coloma) combining for nine.
A total of six Lady Knights finished with at least four kills and a .400 or better hitting percentage. While no Lady Knight reached double-digits in kills, a total of 10 recorded a kill in the win as they hit .358 as a team.
Cullen hit .500 with three block assists. Glancy had a team-high eight kills, hitting .467 with five aces and two block assists.
In the second match, Gannon defeated Alderson-Broaddus in straight sets. Gannon hit an impressive .427 during the win, racking up 47 kills. The Lady Knights hit .390 or better in each of the three sets, committing only six attack errors.
Cullen put Gannon ahead early, stuffing three straight kills to give the Lady Knights a 6-1 lead. Alderson-Broaddus would pull within two after three straight Gannon attack errors. The Lady Knights rebounded with two kills from Cullen and Reineke, eventually winning by a 25-21 final. The pair combined for 12 of Gannon's 21 kills in the win.
Gannon worked quickly in the final two sets, earing wins by 25-11 and 25-17 scores. In the final two sets of the weekend the Lady Knights tallied 26 kills and committed only two attack errors, including finishing the third set without an error.
Cullen hit an astonishing .706 for the match, recording a game-high 12 kills. Reineke finished with 11, hitting .688 with three digs. Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary's Catholic Central) added three kills of her own while also dishing out 32 assists and recording 10 digs and two aces. Sazama added nine kills and seven digs.
In the four matches this weekend Gannon hit .379 as a team and held a 37-13 advantage in service aces. Reineke led the team with a .588 hitting percetaage, averaging 3.27 kills per set. Cullen was close behind, hitting .446, averaging 3.18 kills per set with nine total blocks. DelPiombo averaged 10.4 assists per set wtih 24 digs and eight kills.
"Our goal this week is to get ready for the start of PSAC play next weekend," said Darling. "We'll need to sharpen up our passing and our blocking, so the team can expect a good, hard week of practice."
The Lady Knights open conference play next weekend at the PSAC East-West Crossover. Gannon will take on East Stroudsburg on Friday, September 16 at 2:30 p.m. to open up the weekend.
