Gannon Women's Volleyball Team Sweeps Pitt-Johnstown

Lauren Sazama had six service aces for the Lady Knights Wednesday evening
ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's volleyball team earned its third straight 3-0 sweep Wednesday evening as the Lady Knights took care of Pitt-Johnstown by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18.

Gannon used a balanced offensive attack to earn its third win of the season as eight players recorded kills in the match. Sophomore Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo. / Oakville) led the Lady Knights with nine kills, while also recording five digs and six of Gannon's 12 service aces.

Sophomore Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio / New Knoxville) had seven kills, five digs and two service aces. Kara Cullen (Marstons Mills, Mass. / Barnstable), who earned PSAC West Player-of-the-Week honors after her performance last week, had eight block assists and seven kills in the match.

Junior Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary's Catholic Central) had 15 assists in two sets and Kendall Fischer (Macedonia, Ohio / Nordonia) dished out seven assists in the final set.

As a team the Lady Knights held Pitt-Johnstown to a .069 hitting percentage and recorded nine total team blocks.

“We covered our hitters, served tough and blocked well tonight,” said head coach Matt Darling. “This will be a busy week for our team, and hopefully, we can take this momentum into Friday's matches.”

The win moves Gannon to 3-1 on the season while the Lady Cats fall to 1-1. Gannon returns to action this weekend at the Northern Kentucky Tournament with matches scheduled for Friday, September 10 against Bellarmine (3:00 p.m.) and University of Wisconsin-Parkside (7:00 p.m.) and Sunday, September 11 against Northern Kentucky (4:00 p.m.)Live gameday statistics will be available for all three weekend matches at http://athletics.nku.edu/WVolleyball/live/xlive.htm.
