CHEYNEY, Pa. - Gannon finished a perfect 3-0 weekend with two wins Saturday afternoon at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East-West Crossover Tournament. Gannon earned wins over Cheyney (25-6, 25-2, 25-3) and Kutztown (25-21, 25-14, 25-15) without dropping a set.
“Our goal for the weekend was to go 3-0 to start PSAC play, and we accomplished that goal,” said head coach
Matt Darling. “We played aggressively today and I'm glad we controlled the tempo of play.”
Gannon easily took care of Cheyney in its first match of they day, holding the Wolves to a -.250 hitting percentage. The Lady Knights hit .525 in the match registering 37 kills and 18 service aces as a team.
Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo. / Oakville) had ten kills in two sets, hitting .600.
Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio / New Knoxville) hit .857 in one set of action earning six kills without an attack error.
Kendall Fischer (Macedonia, Ohio / Nordonia) ran the offense for the Lady Knights collecting 25 assists, five kills, five aces and two digs.
Sarah Glancy (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) continued her effective offensive performance from Friday night with two aces and five kills without an error.
The Lady Knights found themselves in a closer battle during its second match of the day, but were able to pull out a close first match and eventually cruise to a 3-0 sweep of the Golden Bears.
Reineke earned her first double-double of the year with 14 kills and 11 digs for the Lady Knights. In a well-rounded performance Reineke hit .440 added two assists, one ace and one solo block.
Sazama also found herself in double-digit kills for the second time on the day, this time picking up 12 also adding five aces.
Kara Cullen (Marstons Mills, Mass. / Barnstable) had nine kills and two block assists for Gannon.
For the second straight match the Lady Knights held their opponents to a negative hitting percentage limiting Kutztown to -.053 for the match. Gannon hit .266 while also recording 44 digs and 11 aces as a team.
The two wins move Gannon to 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in the PSAC. Cheyney falls to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Kutztown is now 8-3 and 0-3 in PSAC matches.
“Now we'll get ready for a very strong Edinboro team on Tuesday night,” said Darling. “Since it's our home opener, we're hoping for a good crowd to give us a strong home-court advantage.”
Gannon will take on Edinboro at the Hammermill Center starting at 7:00 p.m.
