Gannon Volleyball Team Rolls to Easy 3-0 Sweep of Future GLIAC Member Lake Erie

Sophomore Courtney Cook's season-high 13 kills led Gannon to a sweep of Lake Erie Tuesday night.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's volleyball team snapped a brief two-match losing streak with a firm 3-0 sweep of future Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Lake Erie Tuesday night at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights earned the victory by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-23.

Gannon came out of the gates on fire, hitting .417 in the first game. The Lady Knights recorded 15 kills in 24 attempts. The squad cooled off a bit in the next two games with .172 and .056 hitting percentages.

Lake Erie tried to prolong the match by taking a 14-11 lead in the third game. The Storm erased a 10-8 deficit with a 6-1 run. The rally was comprised of a Gannon attacking error, three kills, and two aces.

The visitors led 18-14, before Gannon made its decisive run. Courtney Cook (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) ignited a 5-0 blitz with back-to-back kills. Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) followed with two aces, before Cook and Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) recorded block assists for a 19-18 lead.

The third game went back and forth, becoming a stalemate at 23. Gannon then secured the victory with a Lake Erie service error and Cook's 13th kill of the match.

Cook led the Gannon offensive attack with a season-high 13 kills. The sophomore hit .706, committing only one error in 17 attempts. Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio/New Knoxville) was the other Lady Knight in double digits with 11 kills, three aces, and three digs.

DelPiombo dished out 33 assists during her first start of the season. The sophomore and Jess Saunders (Hinckley, Ohio/Highland) headlined the defense with seven digs each. Sazama fired six aces in the victory.

Gannon improved to 5-2 while Lake Erie dropped to 6-4. The Lady Knights return to action this weekend by hosting the PSAC-WVIAC Crossover Tournament at the Hammermill Center. Head coach Matt Darling's squad entertains Alderson-Broaddus Friday, September 11 at 4 p.m. The Lady Knights conclude the event Saturday, September 12 against West Virginia Wesleyan (12 p.m.) and Wheeling Jesuit (4 p.m.).
