Lady Knight Volleyball Loses Pair of Tough Matches at Gannon Invitational Saturday

Kara Cullen had 14 kills against Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team lost to Wisconsin-Parkside and Adelphi Saturday at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights fell in five sets to Parkside 21-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-19, and 15-11 and then lost 23-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-12, and 15-6 to Adelphi. Saturday marked the second day of action for the Gannon Invitational.

Both losses were heartbreaking for GU, as they led 2-1 against Parkside and 2-0 in the Adelphi contest.

Against the Rangers, Gannon won the first four points of the decisive fifth set and then broke down, dropping eight of the final 12 points of the frame. The teams had traded set wins up to that point.

For the match, freshman Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) had 13 kills and 12 digs. Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) recorded 57 assists and 11 digs. As a team, the Knights had 64 kills in the contest.

Caroline Langer had 13 kills and 10 digs for Parkside. The Rangers hit .309 in the match, containing GU to a .229 percentage.

Gannon jumped to a 2-0 edge in the Adelphi match before the Panthers responded with two set wins of their own. AU scored the first four points of the final frame and cruised to a nine-point set win.

The Knights hit .405 in the first frame, outscoring Adelphi 6-4 to end the set. GU scored 17 of its 25 points on kills. Gannon broke open a close second frame, as three late kills by Sazama were enough for the win.

The Panthers controlled the next three sets for the comeback victory. AU hit .462 in the fourth set and .429 in the decisive frame.

Sazama led with 18 kills and 12 digs. Prybyl dished out 47 assists and had nine digs.
The Knights host Lake Erie Tuesday, September 8. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start at the Hammermill Center.
