Gannon Volleyball Dispatches Cheyney in Three Sets Friday Night

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team defeated Cheyney Friday at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights swept the three sets, 25-3, 25-1, and 25-4. The match kicked off the PSAC East-West Crossover event this weekend. 

GU (9-2, 1-0 PSAC) came out strong, scoring the first nine points of the match. Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) recorded four aces in the run. 

In the second set, Chelsea Barrett (Coloma, Mich./Coloma) took over. She compiled 10 service aces as the Knights scored the last 20 points of the frame. GU hit .636 in the set, holding the Wolves to a -.571 hitting rate. 

Claren Harris (South Milwaukee, Wisc./Oakville) keyed the Gannon attack in the final set, as the sophomore totaled five kills, including the final two points of the match. The Lady Knights hit a sparkling .714 in the frame, recording 11 kills and just one hitting error. 

In the match, GU hit a season-high .591, compiling 28 aces. Barrett had 14 aces, Harris finished with 12 kills, and DelPiombo dished out 23 assists. Cheyney (0-5, 0-3 PSAC) hit -.444 in the loss. 

The .591 team percentage and Barrett's 14 aces are both single-match Gannon highs since at least 2000. Gannon's volleyball archives only date back to the 2000 season. 

The Knights continue play in the crossover, hosting Kutztown and West Chester Saturday, September 19. They face Kutztown at noon and WCU at 2 p.m.
