ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team defeated Alderson-Broaddus Friday at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights won in four sets, 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, and 25-20. The match kicked off the PSAC-WVIAC Crossover event this weekend.
GU (6-2) opened the match with its best set. The Knights led 7-3 early and then held off a Battler charge, as an ace by freshman
Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) gave her team a 21-13 edge. A-B struggled with hitting errors throughout the match, and three miscues allowed Gannon to go up 1-0 in the contest.
Four kills helped put the Knights ahead 6-0 in the second frame, but A-B rallied to take an 11-7 advantage. GU regained the lead on three Sazama kills and rolled from there, compiling 14 kills in the set.
After the Battlers claimed a tight third frame, the teams found themselves locked in a tie at 18 in the fourth set. Three A-B (4-6) hitting errors and two kills by
Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio/New Knoxville) gave the Knights a five-point victory and the match win.
Sazama led with 17 kills and 10 digs, while Reineke added 13 kills. Senior
Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) had 42 assists and
Jess Saunders (Hinckley, Ohio/Highland) recorded 20 digs for Gannon. Saunders' total is a season-high for a Knight player.
A-B hit .022 in the match, including -.045 in the opening set. GU hit .183 in the contest, compiling a .333 percentage in the first frame.
The Knights will host West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit Saturday, September 12. They face Wesleyan at noon and WJU at 4 p.m.
