CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team lost in four sets at California (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West quarterfinal match Tuesday at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans won by scores of 21-25, 25-15, 25-15, and 25-14.
The Lady Knights struck first, winning the opening set by four points. From there, however, Cal controlled, cruising to wins in each of the next three frames.
Kara Cullen (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) led Gannon with 12 kills and
Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) recorded 11 kills and eight digs.
Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) compiled 28 assists, while
Shelly Hill (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) had a team-high 12 digs.
California (31-5) moves onto the conference final four this weekend. They advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight last season. The Vulcans have won each of the last two PSAC Tournaments, and three of the last four.
Gannon (22-9) now waits for NCAA Tournament bids to be announced. The selection show is Monday, November 16. The Knights are fifth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings as of October 29. California is first. The three conference champions represented in the Atlantic gain automatic bids, with the next five highest-ranked programs receiving at-large spots.
