Cal Sweeps Lady Knight Volleyball Saturday Afternoon

Jess Saunders recorded 20 digs in Gannon's loss to Cal Saturday.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team was swept by California (Pa.) Saturday at the Hammermill Center. The Vulcans won by scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-16 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West match.

Cal improved to 15-0 in the conference with the win, and early on, it showed why. Pulling away from a tie at four, the Vulcans went on a 13-4 spurt to take control of the first set. They contained the Knights to a -.027 hitting percentage in the 11-point win.

GU (19-7, 10-5 PSAC) was better in the second frame, leading 9-6 on the strength of two Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) kills. However, California responded by scoring the next seven points. The set was tied later at 16, but the Vulcans again ran away, tallying six of the next seven points in the frame.

The teams traded scores in the third set, eventually tying at 11. A 6-0 Cal run gave the Vulcans breathing room and they did not look back, winning by nine.

Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio/New Knoxville) led with 10 kills, adding seven digs. Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) handed out 26 assists and Jess Saunders (Hinckley, Ohio/Highland) collected 20 digs in the loss. Cal's Ludmila Amaral hit .355 and posted 14 kills.

Gannon heads across town to face Mercyhurst Tuesday, October 27, in another conference contest. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
