ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University volleyball team will begin its 2008 conference schedule with a match against Clarion University Tuesday, September 9 at 7 p.m at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights (3-4) will compete in their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game, taking on their new West rival, the Golden Eagles of Clarion (8-1, 0-1 PSAC).
Gannon dropped four matches at the TownePlace Suites Classic at the University of Findlay last weekend. Prior to that, GU swept its three matches at the inaugural Gannon Invitational. The Lady Knights beat Lake Erie (Ohio), Pitt-Johnstown, and Daemen (N.Y.) to open the season.
Seniors Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Julienne Moots (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), along with junior Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic), are the team's captains for the 2008 season. Tubbs is the team's leader in kills with 93. Prybyl, the Lady Knights' setter, leads the team with 178 assists in 2008.
Clarion won four matches at the East Stroudsburg Tournament last weekend. The Golden Eagles suffered a loss against California (Pa.) in their only league match on September 2.
GU was chosen to finish seventh in the PSAC West, according to the preseason coaches' poll. Clarion was picked to finish in a fifth-place tie.
