ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team began the 2008 season with a victory over Lake Erie (Ohio) College Friday evening at the Hammermill Center. The 3-0 win featured scores of 25-9, 25-20, and 25-13.
Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) led the team with 15 kills and 11 digs. Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) led with 20 assists, while freshman Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) added 12.
GU took control from the start of the match, going up 5-0 and then 11-2 over the Storm. The first game saw the Lady Knights hit .556, while the team held Lake Erie to a -.050 hitting percentage.
The Storm did not give up, however. In the second game, Lake Erie found themselves down 15-14 midway through the frame. From there, though, the Lady Knights went on a 6-0 run to regain control of the game and the match.
Prybyl also led GU with five service aces in the contest, the opener of the inaugural Gannon Invitational.
The Storm was led by Lauren Bogatay, who had 12 assists, and Brittany Raggets, who had 13 digs.
Gannon moves to 1-0 on the season, while Lake Erie falls to 0-1.
The Lady Knights continue hosting the Gannon Invitational tomorrow. They will face Pitt-Johnstown at 10 a.m. and then Daemen (N.Y.) at 4 p.m.
