McElhaney led the Gannon wrestling team to a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams at the NCAA Division II East Regional, finishing ahead rival Mercyhurst. The junior entered the weekend with a 12-8 record, before winning all four matches en route to the 149-pound regional championship. Seeded third, McElhaney defeated two unseeded opponents in the first two rounds. He then pinned second-ranked Nick DiCarlo of Anderson at the 6:34 mark and upset top-seeded Latra Collick of Newberry 7-3 in the finals. McElhaney will now join Jacob Tazzi and Frank McGrath at the NCAA Division II National Championships March 13-14 in Houston, Texas.
