Jose Matos helped the Gannon wrestling team finish second out of six teams last Saturday at the National Catholic Invitational. The junior transfer won the 125-pound division with a perfect 4-0 record. He entered the invitational as the third seed, but knocked off the top two seeds back-to-back. Matos opened the bracket with victories against Mercyhurst’s Timothy Stanton (6-3) and Mercyhurst North East’s Matt Yanovich (7-4).

The Williamstown, N.J., native then disposed of second-seeded Brian Dean of Notre Dame (5-1) in the semifinals and upset top-seeded Kenny Trumbetta of Seton Hill in the finals by a 2-1 count. The region’s top-ranked wrestler at 125, Trumbetta is also tabbed second nationally among all NCAA Division II wrestlers.
