THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 4, Shippensburg 3
  • Records: Gannon (31-16), Shippensburg (25-27)
  • Location: Butler, Pa. - Kelly Automotive Park
  • The Short Story: Redshirt freshman Nate Cardy's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) sacrifice fly drove home redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) with the go-ahead run during the bottom of the eighth inning and sophomore David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) earned the victory with three shutout innings as Gannon eliminated Shippensburg 4-3 Monday afternoon at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament hosted by Kelly Automotive Park in Butler, Pennsylvania.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon dented the scoreboard first with a solo bomb over the left field fence by sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) during the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead to 2-0 in the third. Senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, stole second base and scored on DeVita's single to left field.
  • Shippensburg cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly during the top of the fourth inning and forged ahead with back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth.
  • Gannon responded with the tying run during the bottom of the frame. Junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) ripped a double over the centerfielder's head with one out. Wiesen then hit a soft grounder to the left side with two outs. His hustle down the line forced an errand throw that scored Restuccia from second base with the tying run.
  • The two teams remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth inning. DeVita led off with a single, before moving to third base on a failed pick-off and sophomore Charles Benack's (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) single to right field. Cardy followed with a deep fly ball to center that pushed DeVita across the plate with the go-ahead run.
  • Cricks completed a strong three innings out of the bullpen with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning.

GAME NOTES
  • DeVita led the offensive unit with a 3-for-4 day, scoring once and driving home one run.
  • Restuccia finished 2-for-2 with one run.
  • Redshirt junior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) received a no-decision after logging six innings. He allowed three runs on six hits, striking out one and walking four.
  • Cricks improved to 5-4 with three shutout innings out of the bullpen, surrendering only two hits and striking out two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll and eighth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
  • The Golden Knights recorded their first postseason appearance since defeating Slippery Rock 9-3 at the PSAC Tournament on May 9, 2013.
  • Gannon scored first for the 37th time in 47 games.
  • Cardy's game-winning sacrifice fly set a new Gannon single-season record with his 53rd RBI, breaking the previous mark of 52 set by Adam Foust in 1999.
  • DeVita recorded his 17th multiple-hit game of the season with his fifth performance of three hits or more.
  • Restuccia generated his eighth multiple-hit effort of the campaign.
  • Cox's home run in the second inning was his third of the season.
  • Cricks made only his second relief appearance of the year to go along with 11 starting assignments.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues action at the PSAC Tournament Tuesday, May 10 against the West Chester-Mercyhurst loser in another elimination game.
  • The contest is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
