GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon threatened immediately. The Golden Knights loaded the bases during their first at-bat after a lead-off single by senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) followed by walks to redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). However, the double play doused the potential fire.
  • After leaving the bases loaded in the second, Gannon finally got to Mercyhurst starter Joe Gnacinski in the third. Cardy and sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) had back-to-back one-out doubles to plate the first run. With two outs and runners on the corners, the Mercyhurst third baseman booted a grounder by junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) which allowed Oruch to score the second run of the inning.
  • Junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) danced in and out of trouble almost every inning, but kept Mercyhurst at bay through six innings of work. He stranded seven runners through the first five innings. Mercyhurst left Lakers on first and second base during the second, fourth and fifth innings.
  • Mercyhurst was able to cut the deficit in half with a solo home run in the sixth and tied the contest with an RBI single in the seventh.
  • The Lakers took their first lead of the afternoon at 3-2 on another solo home run that led off the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Gannon had one last chance with the top of its line-up in the top of the ninth inning, but the Golden Knights went down in order.

GAME NOTES
  • Wiesen, Cardy and sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) led the offensive unit with two hits each.
  • Cardy finished with a pair of doubles and one run.
  • Oruch went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
  • Colosi received a no decision after tossing six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked four.
  • Junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished the last two innings, giving up one run on two hits to go along with two strikeouts.
