HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon went to work early, scoring during its first at-bat. After redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) walked and sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) was hit by a pitch, sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) doubled home the first run with two outs.
  • West Chester answered with three runs during the bottom of the frame. Justin Roman's two-run homer flipped the score, before an RBI ground-out pushed the Golden Rams' lead to 3-1 after one inning.
  • Redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) brought Gannon within one run in the third, blasting a two-out home run to right field.
  • Gannon put runners in scoring position twice during the final four innings with its best chance to tie the contest coming in the eighth when Cardy doubled down the left field line with one out. He moved to third on a ground-out, but was stranded at third after another ground-out.
  • After four scoreless frames, West Chester added a pair of insurance runs during the eighth inning following junior Santiago Mendez's (Potterville, Mich./Lansing Eastern) exit after 114 pitches.
  • O'Neill then retired Gannon in order during the top of the ninth inning for his ninth save of the season.

GAME NOTES
  • Both Cardy and Oruch went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Mendez dropped to 7-3 after tossing seven innings. He struck out five and walked five.
  • Freshman Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) and junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) combined to get the final three West Chester outs, allowing only one hit.
