Grilli, a native New Yorker, is the only product of the Gannon baseball program to make it all the way to the top. He pitched three seasons for the Knights, before signing with the Tiger organization in the Spring of 1970. He worked his way through the minors and hurled for the Tigers for three seasons through 1977. For the Knights, Grilli's ERA of 0.69 ranked fourth best nationally in 1970.
