Gannon University takes pride in the achievements of its student-athletes on the athletic fields. But even more importantly, Gannon athletes excel both on the field and in the classroom. Gannon’s 351 student-athletes produced an overall 3.19 grade-point average during the 2009 fall semester.
Sixty-three percent of the students playing sports at Gannon achieved a 3.0 GPA or better. Forty-three student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall semester.
The nine women’s intercollegiate teams produced a combined 3.37 GPA. In fact, all nine teams achieved a team GPA of 3.05 or better. The nine men’s intercollegiate teams produced a combined 3.00 GPA.
The 2008-09 academic year was an excellent one in the classroom for Gannon’s student-athletes. Ten were named to ESPN The Magazine All-District Academic teams for their academic and athletic skills. Kyle Goldcamp, a senior men’s basketball player, headlined the year after being named to the all-district first team and all-america second team. In addition, he was among the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Winter Top 10 winners.
Ashley Tubbs (volleyball) and Kolten Hoffman (baseball) were named to their respective academic all-district first teams. Kevin McElhaney (wrestling), Jamie Shadd (women’s soccer), Colleen Schwarz (women’s soccer), Kara Hensley (softball), and Matt Ward (football) landed spots on their academic second teams. Megan Beresford (women’s swimming and diving) and Colleen Dixon (women’s lacrosse) earned third-team honors.
The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) honored five Gannon men’s water polo student-athletes for their combined efforts: Jamison Anton, Greg Nelson, Ben Syme, John Krakowski, and Kyle Kuser.
The PSAC named 158 Gannon student-athletes scholar-athletes in 2008-09. Previously, 727 student-athletes were selected to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic teams during Gannon’s final nine years in the league. In addition, the wrestling team, which didn’t compete in the GLIAC, had six Academic All-Americans.
In 2008-09, the Gannon wrestling team was ranked fifth among all NCAA Division II teams with a 3.270 cumulative team grade-point average. It was a jump from the 13th position the previous year. In 2007-08, the women’s cross country team recorded the second-highest team GPA in the country. The men’s and women’s swimming teams ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, in 2007-08. The women’s lacrosse program recorded the best team GPA (3.35) in the nation in 2007.
