KEY SEQUENCE
  • As they would go on to show later in the day, the Lady Knights can't be counted out even in the face of tall odds. So despite being down 2-0 in the match, Gannon held a 15-9 lead midway through the third set, looking to start a comeback. Instead, UIS netted 11 of the next 12 points to shoot in front, and held on to close the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights got out to a quick 4-1 lead on kills from Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute), and they managed to hang with the lead until three straight Prairie Star points tied it at 8-8. UIS would go on to take its first lead at 11-10, but McClung and Greenfield again converted to tie it at 13-all.
  • The Stars moved out to a 23-18 lead late, before a Smith kill and an ace from Lydia Lukomski (Portville, N.Y./Portville Central) pulled the Knights to within two. UIS would grab the final two points to seal the first set.
  • An even start to the second game didn't see either side make a big move until the Prairie Stars went on a 7-1 run to build an 11-7 advantage. It was still a four-point margin a few points later before kills out of McClung, Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Kristin Schorr (Evansville, Ind./North Posey) keyed a 5-0 run.
  • A block from Kerestes and Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) later tied it up, but a 4-1 run saw UIS get to set point at 24-21. Another block, this time from Greenfield and McClung, and another Kerestes kill made it interesting, but a UIS kill finished it.
  • A strong 7-0 run out of the Knights featured two kills from Kerestes and a block with Greenfield, as well as an ace out of Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). That pushed Gannon ahead 9-3 in the early going of the third set, and the lead held at six thanks to an ace from Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) and two more kills out of Greenfield.
  • The Prairie Stars' big run made it 20-16, and while the Knights provided a quick 3-1 burst on the strength of two Schorr kills, UIS would seal the match on the next rally.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Facing a deficit for the second time on the day, Gannon quickly flipped the script on host Indianapolis. The Lady Knights trailed for just one point in the fourth set, and ripped off an 11-2 run to put it out of reach. Three total kills and two blocks from Smith and Kerestes in the run shot the Knights out to a 21-10 lead, and they didn't look back on their way to a five-set win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded points early in the opening set, with a block from Greenfield and Schorr making it 4-1 before UIndy came back to tie it at 4-all. The Greyhounds took their only lead of the set at 11-10 before a kill from Schorr and back-to-back blocks from the combo of McClung and Greenfield started a 9-1 run. The 19-12 advantage allowed Gannon a cushion, and it closed the set with four of the final five points to take an early lead.
  • The second set was one of swings, with the Greyhounds going up early, followed by four straight from Gannon to hop in front 9-8. Indianapolis scored four of the next five to flip the lead once again, and it took the Knights some work to get back to even. Two straight aces from Leitshuh got them to within 17-16, and kills from Schorr and McClung drew them even at 20-20. Two kills late from McClung were dangerous, but UIndy tied the match at 1-1.
  • A couple three-point runs from the hosts built them a 15-11 lead midway through the third set, but Gannon would once again chip away. Kerestes got the Knights back within 20-19 with a pair of kills, and putaways from Beyers and Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) tied it up at 23-23. Three kills from there for the Greyhounds would put an end to the set and give them the match lead.
  • Kills from Kerestes and Sampson made it 5-3 shortly after UIndy took an early lead. The Knights kept a comfortable lead the rest of the set, with a pair of kills from Greenfield pushing them along until their big 11-2 burst that flipped the tide of the match. A pair of big blocks late pushed it to set point, and Greenfield finished it off with another kill.
  • In a deciding fifth set, Gannon scored the first two points before the Greyhounds ran off three straight. Once again, the Knights found a response, this time with Smith registering three straight kills to start a 5-0 run to build a 7-3 lead. Indianapolis would not get closer than two points the rest of the way. Two kills from Greenfield and a Sampson ace capped the comeback win.

GAME NOTES
  • From the end of the third set against Indianapolis, Gannon would trail for just two total serves the rest of the way, both at 3-2 in the final two sets. The Knights answered with a three-point run in the fourth, and five straight points in the fifth.
  • The match against UIndy was already Gannon's third to go the distance in six matches this season. It was their first five-set victory.
  • As its 3-3 overall record may suggest, Gannon has been involved in a number of tight matches. They're 13-12 in individual sets, but while the Knights have yet to drop a set by more than five points, eight of their set wins have come by at least six points.
  • Gannon hit .294 as a team against the Greyhounds, with just 13 total attack errors. That is the fewest errors in a five-set match since also committing just 13 against Clarion in 2010.
  • Sampson posted her first double-double of the season against UIndy, going for 14 kills and 13 digs to go with four blocks.
  • Beyers recorded 52 assists against Indianapolis, two off her career high. She finished with 71 total assists on the day, adding 12 digs and four blocks.
  • Leitshuh posted 16 digs in three sets against UIS, and followed that up with 22 in the nightcap.
  • Greenfield hit .303 on the day, registering 16 total kills and 11 blocks.
QUOTEABLE
  • "We played against two very good teams today; and even though we had another split on the day, we feel good about pulling out a road win after being down in the match. We needed a great win, and the team stepped up to the challenge and earned it."  -Gannon coach Matt Darling
