Gannon Holds Off Late-Charging Shippensburg in Opening PSAC Tournament Game

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 4, Shippensburg 2
  • Records: Gannon (28-12), Shippensburg (27-22)

  • The Short Story: Gannon Softball scored four runs in the first inning which proved to be enough as the Lady Knights downed Shippensburg, 4-2, advancing to the next round against Bloomsburg on Thursday (May 3).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led off the game with a single to second base before the next two batters were retired.
  • Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) singled and Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) walked to load the bases as Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) stepped to the plate.
  • Taliani lined a ball to center field that scored a pair as the Lady Knights jumped ahead 2-0.
  • Gannon wasn't done yet, though. Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) stepped to the plate and doubled to right field, scoring two more for Gannon as they took a 4-0 lead to the top of the second inning.
  • Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was cruising through the early innings. Shippensburg didn't register its first hit until the fifth inning when Ghanayem singled to left field.
  • The Raiders got on the board with one run in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. Gannon taking the game, 4-2.
 
GAME NOTES  
  • Taliani went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) and Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) both went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Gumbita won her 16th game of the season with a complete-game performance. She allowed two runs while striking out eight batters.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Lady Knights have the second-lowest team-ERA in the conference at 1.88 and have allowed the fewest runs this season (110).
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) extended the Lady Knights' longest active hitting-streak to six games.
  • Gannon evened up its all-time record against Shippensburg with each team winning three of six games.
  • The Lady Knights clinched their first regular season PSAC division title in the nine-year history in the PSAC conference.
