Lady Knights Finish Sixth at WWPA Women's Water Polo Championships

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Water Polo finished sixth at the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships after falling to Mercyhurst, 10-5, on Saturday (April 29).

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst scored the first goal of the game before Gannon's Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) countered with the equalizer at the 4:04 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Lakers edged out to a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.
  • Cooney scored her second goal to begin the second quarter with a laser to the back of the net. Cooney drew the Lady Knights back to within 3-2.
  • Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) knotted the game back up at three with her first goal of the day at the 5:28 mark of the period.
  • Mercyhurst scored three-consecutive goals in the final four and a half minutes of the half to go up 6-3 at halftime.
  • Cooney came out in the third quarter to cut the Lady Knights' deficit to 6-4 with a goal at the 6:05 mark.
  • Gannon's fifth goal came from Barr before the third period closed, the Lady Knights trailing 9-5 at the close of the quarter.
  • Merychurst scored the only goal of the fourth quarter and took a 10-5 decision.

  • Cooney scored a team-high three goals.
  • Gannon connected on 5-of-24 shots in the game.
