Lady Knights Head to Fifth-Place Match after Falling to Sonoma State at WWPA Championships

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Water Polo fell to Sonoma State in the opening round of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Conference Championships in Geneva, Ohio, 12-6.

  • Sonoma State jumped out to a 3-0 advantage before Gannon's Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) got the Lady Knights on the board with just 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
  • Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) made it back-to-back goals for the Lady Knights with the first goal of the second quarter. Gannon trailed just 3-2.
  • Sonoma State took a 5-2 advantage into halftime.
  • The Lady Knights came out and scored two third-period goals from Christine Uht (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School). Sonoma State continued to lead 10-4 at the end of three quarters.
  • Cooney scored her second goal of the day to begin the final period. It was her 14th-straight match with at least two goals and 16th match overall this season.
  • Barr scored the final Lady Knights' goal with 6:25 remaining in the game that Sonoma State would take 12-6.
