Gannon Lady Knights Win a Thriller Over Pitt-Johnstown, 74-71

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights hung on to win their fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest of the season at Pitt-Johnstown on Monday night (Jan. 9). The Lady Knights were led by senior Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice)' 19 points and six rebounds.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon jumped out to an early 11-5 lead capped off by an and-one from freshman Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic).
  • The Lady Knights extended their lead to nine at the end of the first quarter with a Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) lay-up, Gannon led 21-12 at the first break.
  • Pitt-Johnstown began chipping away at the Golden Knight lead in the second quarter. Gabrielle Smith knocked down a three-ponter at the 8:15 mark and then added two free throws 25 seconds later to close the gap to 23-21.
  • Next UPJ possesion, Laurel O'Barto buried a three-pointer to give the Lady Cats a one-point lead 24-23.
  • Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) responded on Gannon's end, she drew a Lady Cat' foul and converted both free throws to reclaim the lead.
  • Gannon went to the half up 35-33.
  • Gannon and Pitt-Johnstown battled back-and-forth in the third quarter. Gannon extended its lead to 38-33 before UPJ began a 15-6 run to take its own four-point lead, 48-44.
  • The Lady Knights went on a mini 11-7 run in the final four minutes of the third quarter to take a 55-50 lead to the fourth quarter.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) hit a jumper to begin the quarter, giving the Lady Knights a 57-50 lead. It was the largest lead in the quarter.
  • The lead the melted away as time ticked off the clock. Olivia McCabe hit a layup with 2:43 remaining to cut the lead to four, 68-64.
  • Thirty seconds later Victoria Moreland connected on a three-pointer to draw the Lady Cats within one point, 68-67.
  • That one-point deficit was as close as UPJ could claw. Gannon hit its free throws down the stretch and pulled out a 74-71 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) paced the Lady Knights with 19 points and six rebounds.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) dumped in 17 points to with six rebounds.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) tied a career-high, grabbing eight rebounds.
  • The Lady Knights shot 43.5 percent from the field (20-46) despite going only 1-of-11 from behind the arc.
  • Gannon converted 33-of-39 attempts from the free-throw line (.846).
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is 3-0 when scoring at least 70+ points in a game this season.
  • The 33 made free throws by the Lady Knights were the most by a PSAC team in a game this season.
  • The last time Gannon made more than 33 free-throws in a game was Nov. 30, 2006 at Wayne State. The Lady Knights went 39-of-46 (.846) that day, winning 87-66.
  • Gannon is now 2-2 when leading at the half. Gannon led 35-33 at intermission against Pitt-Johnstown.
  • The Lady Knights had a season-high 29 points from its bench.
