Gannon's Drew Deimel Finishes 11th at NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship

Drew Deimel placed 11th at the NCAA National Championship

FLORENCE, Ala. – Gannon's Drew Deimel (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) moved up the leaderboard for the third straight day at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship, finishing the 54-hole tournament tied for 11th place out of 108 golfers. Deimel shot a one-under-par round of 71 in the final round at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals.

A three-hole playoff was needed to determine the individual champion after Kyle Souza of Chico State and Daniel Young of Lynn University were tied at four-under-par after the conclusion of the third round. The pair recorded identical scores on the 18th hole the first two tie breakers before Souza recorded a par on the third tie breaker to earn the individual title.

Deimel matched his second round score of 71 on the third day of competition to finish with a three day score of 218. The two-over-par score ranked him tied for 11th out of 108 golfers.

After a bogey on the opening 10th hole, the senior rebounded with a birdie on the par-5 581-yard 12th hole. Deimel had back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes before rebounding with a birdie on the par-3 200-yard 18th hole to head into the turn at one-over-par for the day.

Deimel made a push up the leaderboard on the final nine holes starting with a birdie on the par-4 425-yard second hole. It marks the third straight day the Erie, Pa., native recorded a birdie on the second hole. Deimel also birdied the par-4, 370-yard fourth and the par-5 434-yard seventh. The senior closed out his final round with a bogey on the eighth and a par on the ninth to finish at one-under-par for the day.

The top eight  teams (Lynn, Barton, Central Oklahoma, Central Missouri, Abilene Christian, Fort Lewis, California State-Monterey Bay and Newberry) will all advance to the quarterfinal round of match play tomorrow. 2011 is the first time the team champion will be determined by match play.

Deimel made his second consecutive trip to the national tournament as an individual, earning the individual bid to nationals after finishing fourth out of 108 golfers at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Atlantic/East Regional. The top five teams plus the top two individuals not on an advancing team earned qualifying spots to nationals. He finished with a one-under-par score of 215 during the three-day regional. His tournament was highlighted with a field-best score of three-under-par 69 during the second round.

A 2010 NCCAA Division II PING All-Atlantic Region selection, Deimel finished 18th out of 108 golfers during last year's NCAA Division II National Championships. Deimel shot three rounds of 77 and one round of 73 to finish 16-over-par with a score of 304.
