Local Rivalry Set to Tip-off for 75th Time When Gannon Women's Basketball Team Travels to Mercyhurst Wednesday

The Gannon Women's Basketball team will make the short trip to Mercyhurst on Wednesday to face the Lakers at 5:30 p.m.

The Gannon women's basketball team will face off against local rival Mercyhurst for the 75th time in school history Wednesday evening at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Gannon (11-11, 3-7) is coming off a 72-55 road win over Lock Haven. In the game Jennifer Papich (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Julie Kleber (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) reached double-digit scoring for the seventh straight time with a game-high 18 points.

Mercyhurst is 13-12 this season with a 5-5 mark in conference play. The Lakers lead the PSAC in field goal percentage (46.2) thanks to senior Amy Achesinski, who is shooting 59.9 percent. She is tops in the conference and fifth in the country. Gannon is fourth in the PSAC, shooting 42.7 percent. 

The Gannon-Mercyhurst series will celebrate its platinum anniversary on Wednesday as the two schools face of for the 75th time. Gannon leads the all-time series 46-25. The Lakers snapped a 13-game Gannon winning streak earlier this season at the Hammermill with a 75-63 win.
