Gannon Volleyball Takes Care of Davis & Elkins

Sophomore Lauren Sazama recorded nine kills, five digs and two service aces in the Lady Knights victory

Elkins, W.Va. – The Gannon volleyball team bounced back from a loss earlier on the day to pick up their first win of the season over Davis and Elkins. The Golden Knights move to 1-1 on the season after defeating the Senators by scores of 25-9, 25-17, 25-12. 

Gannon took advantage of scoring runs during the match, never giving Davis & Elkins a chance to gain momentum. Junior Kara Cullen (Marstons Mills, Mass. / Barnstable) turned in an impressive performace for the Lady Knights hitting .750 for the match with 12 kills and 3.5 total blocks.

"I'm happy to get the win in tonight's match," said head coach Matt Darling. "We wanted to use our middles tonight, and Kara, Claren, and Sarah all put up great numbers. The passing was great for the second straight match, and Alex and Kendall did a nice job of getting the ball to the open hitters."

Sophomore Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo. / Oakville) added to the offense with nine kills and two service aces. Sophomore Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio / New Knoxville) added seven kills, three digs and two block assists.

Junior Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary's Catholic Central) finished with 22 assists on the night.

On the night, Gannon recorded 37 kills while committing just seven errors, posting a .455 hitting percentage. 

"Hopefully we'll take this momentum into tomorrow's match vs. Texas A & M Kingsville," said Darling. The Lady Knights finish the weekend's competition wtih noon match against the Javelinas.
