Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Records CWPA's Seventh-Highest GPA; 11 Lady Knights Named to Scholar-Athlete Team

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's water polo team owns the seventh-highest cumulative grade-point average among Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) programs announced Tuesday afternoon by the organization. In addition, 11 Lady Knights were named to the CWPA Varsity Scholar-Athlete team.

George Washington University was the CWPA's top academic program, owning a 3.54 cumulative team grade-point average. Macalester College (3.53), Connecticut College (3.53), Harvard University (3.43) and Wheaton College (3.42) completed the top five.

Brown University (3.33), Gannon University (3.25), Mercyhurst College (3.20), Indiana University (3.17) and Grove City College (3.16) rounded out the top 10.

Sarah Anderson (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Colleen Harriger (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Lauren Myrick (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Stephanie Komorek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Kelly Steininger (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) were named to the “Outstanding” team, which is reserved for student-athletes with cumulative grade-point averages between 3.71 and 4.0.

Anderson owns a 3.77 cumulative GPA while majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. The true freshman produced 12 goals, 10 assists and 11 steals last season. Harriger has a 4.0 mark as a Pre-Med/Biology major. The sophomore had 46 goals, 25 assists and 28 steals in 2010.

Myrick has produced a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average as a History and International Business major. The junior recorded five goals, four assists and 14 steals during his second collegiate season. Komorek has a 3.90 GPA while majoring in Elementary/Special Education. The junior had five goals, four assists and eight steals last season. Steininger owns a 3.83 cumulative GPA as an Early Childhood/Special Education major. She produced 11 goals, 11 assists and 37 steals as a true freshman.

Caitlin Andrews (Tustin, Calif./Tustin), Annie Greenhill (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda), Libbie Guina (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) and Laurel Martinez (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) landed a spot on the “Superior” team reserved for cumulative GPAs between 3.41 and 3.70.

Andrews has a 3.43 cumulative GPA as a Nursing major. The junior had 10 goals, three assists and two steals last season. Greenhill owns a 3.43 cumulative GPA while majoring in English/Secondary Education. The senior finished the 2010 campaign with 49 goals, 25 assists and 40 steals.

Guina has produced a 3.52 grade-point average as a Secondary Education/Social Studies major. The sophomore made 28 saves in limited action as a goalkeeper. Martinez owns a 3.67 GPA while majoring in Pre-Law/Legal Studies. The sophomore had six goals, five assists and six steals.

Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) and Kendra Plackemeier (Bonsall, Calif./Fallbrook) were named to the “Excellent” team reserved for cumulative GPAs between 3.25 and 3.4. Bosy has a 3.31 cumulative GPA as a Sport and Exercise Science major while Plackemeier holds a 3.36 mark as a Nursing major.

Eleven of 17 Gannon women's water polo student-athletes were named to the 2010 CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team. Previously named the All-Academic Team, the program honors varsity and club student-athletes who have achieved grade-point averages of 3.25 or higher and competed during the 2010 women's season.

Overall, 35 athletes were honored with Outstanding (3.71-4.0) recognition, while 60 earned Superior (3.41-3.7) and 43 were recognized with Excellent (3.25-3.4) accolades.
