ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon cross country teams continued their long tradition of academic excellence in 2009-10. Both the women's and men's squads have been named an NCAA Division II All-Academic team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the seventh consecutive season. Led by 20th-year head coach
John Carrig, both teams recorded one of the top-seven grade-point averages in the country.
The women's team posted its sixth consecutive top-nine finish, ranking fifth in the nation with a 3.65 cumulative team grade-point average. The Lady Knights were second nationally in 2007-08, fourth in 2006-07 and second in 2005-06.
The selection of the all-academic teams was based on cumulative grade-point averages submitted by member head coaches for the fall 2009 academic term. All teams above a cumulative 3.00 GPA were honored for their classroom performances.
Truman State was listed No. 1 with a 3.78 team GPA. Seattle Pacific (3.72), Pittsburg State (3.69) and the University of Tampa (3.69) were the only NCAA Division II women's cross country programs with a better team GPA.

The Gannon men's squad ranked seventh among NCAA Division II programs with a 3.42 cumulative team grade-point average, a jump of 42 spots from last year's 49th-place finish and 57 spots from the previous season's 64th-place finish. The squad had produced three consecutive top-26 finishes prior to the 2007-08 academic year, placing 16th in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
Northern State and Edinboro had the best men's GPA with a 3.54 mark. The University of Findlay (3.51), the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (3.49), Truman State (3.44) and the University of Mary (3.44) were the only NCAA Division II men's cross country teams in the country with a better team GPA.
