ERIE, Pa. - Gannon head men’s basketball coach John T. Reilly announced the program’s 2009-10 regular-season schedule on Tuesday. The slate includes 27 games, 14 contests against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opponents, and four PSAC cross-over affairs which do not count in the league standings.

The men’s schedule features 17 home games, including seven of eight during the first semester. Ten road games dot the slate. The Golden Knights open the regular season Saturday, November 21 against Urbana at the Hammermill Center. The squad will play a home-and-home series against Urbana, which will be an NCAA Division II provisional member in 2009-10. The two squads clash Saturday, December 5 in Urbana, Ohio.

Gannon then hosts the 26th annual Gary Miller Classic November 27-28. Lake Erie (6-20), Bowie State (15-13), and Edinboro (18-10) form the Thanksgiving tournament field.

The 2009-10 schedule includes plenty of opponents who posted winning records last season. The Golden Knights’ 2009-10 opponents won nearly 50 percent (257-263) of their games last season. Two of those opponents played in the 2009 NCAA Division II Tournament: Indiana (Pa.) and Kutztown. The Knights will face IUP twice and Kutztown on the road January 2.

In addition to the Gary Miller Classic, the home schedule is also highlighted by the 36th annual Porreco Cup, scheduled for December 29-30. Gannon has won five of the last six Porreco Cup titles and 12 of the last 15. The four-team field includes former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Ferris State, West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) member Seton Hill, and NAIA affiliate Taylor (Ind.).

The home schedule includes an NCAA Division II Atlantic Region showdown with WVIAC foe Glenville State Saturday, December 19. The Pioneers posted a 20-8 record last season.

Fourteen of the final 15 games of the regular-season pit Gannon against PSAC Western Division opponents. The stretch tips off Wednesday, January 13 against California (Pa.) at home.

All PSAC home games will begin at 7:30 p.m. except for the January 9 and 10 cross-over contests which will tip off at 3 p.m. Non-conference games will also begin at 7:30 p.m., while Gary Miller Classic and Porreco Cup games will begin at 6 and 8 p.m.

Gannon concludes the regular season with five of its last seven games at home. The Golden Knights host rival Mercyhurst Wednesday, February 24, before hosting Lock Haven Saturday, February 27 for Senior Night and the regular-season finale.

The PSAC Quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, March 2. The highest remaining Eastern Division seed will host the 2010 PSAC Final Four March 5-6.

Athletes of the Week
Drew Deimel
Men's Golf
Deimel earned the final 2009-10 Gannon male athlete-of-the-week honor by qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Men's Golf Championship May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana. The junior did so after finishing tied for sixth at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional last week at the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, West Virginia. He is the first Gannon golfer to qualify for the national championship since current head coach Dave Patronik played in the 2003 event as a freshman.Deimel secured the last individual spot with a five-over-par 77 during the final round. He completed the regional with a three-round total of nine-over-par 225. Deimel opened the tournament with a three-over-par 75 during the first round, totaled a one-over-par 73 during the second round, before completing the event with a five-over-par 77. The junior opened the third round with an even-par 36 on the back nine, before turning around and scoring a five-over-par 41 on the front nine. He finished the day with 10 pars, two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey - his first and only of the regional. The Erie, Pa., native recorded back-to-back birdies on the par-3, 180-yard 13th hole and the par-4, 384-yard 14th hole during the last day. It marked the first time Deimel had birdied either hole that week. He previously birdied the par-5, 501-yard 12th hole and the par-4, 420-yard 16th hole during each of the first two rounds. Deimel was one of four golfers who qualified for the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional as an individual. He is the first Gannon golfer to be invited to an NCAA regional since Patronik played in the 2006 NCAA Division II Great Lakes/South Central Regional as a senior.
Taryn Millerd
Women's Lacrosse
Millerd captured the final 2009-10 Gannon female athlete-of-the-week honor by breaking the school scoring record for women's lacrosse. The senior midfielder recorded 12 goals, one assist, 13 points, one game-winning goal, two ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover during two matches in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament last week. She opened the tourney with seven goals during a 15-9 victory at Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals. Millerd then added five scores during a late 19-18 loss at West Chester in the semifinals.
